Can you find George R Cooke in 1871 census
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 14:43 UTC (UK) »

I am having problems finding George R(ichard) Cooke in the 1871 census.

In the1881 census it states he was born Hall Green, Cheshire (he is a boarder)and in 1891 (married) in Odd Rode, Cheshire.

George was born in 1859/1860 and married Mary Hodgkinson in 1880 in Wolaston Staffs.

Very grateful if he can be found,

Have you had a look in
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html
there are a few George Richard cooke's born various places.some living in the u.s,there are also lots of voting registers.I don't know what to look for,so thought i would mention it.Because there are hundreds of records of various kinds.I think eventually you get to all the census that include the wanted name.

Hi
This is only a possible on looking through the 1871

Joseph Cooke 36 b cheshire
Betsy     " "      31 b burslem Staffs
GEORGE " "      11 b burslem 1860
Arthur    " "        8 b burslem
William   " "        6 b burslem
Joseph   " "        4 b burslem
Frederick " "       9 weeks b burslem

At the time Joseph was a potter and living Burslem, its only a possible with you not being able to find him, it caught my eye as George's father was born cheshire, in some cases i have had the first born could of been born in a differant place from the rest of the children but are all put down as the same. or do you already know the parents of George ?

Another possibility, based on birth place .....

1861

Wolstanton RG9/1924 Folio 84 Page 11

Jos* Cook Head M 39 Coal Miner Cheshire Hall Green
Sarah do Wife M 40 Cheshire Bartomley
Charles do Son 9 Scholar Staffs Harris Head
Mary do Daur 5 Staffs Mow Cop
Richard do Son 2 Staffs Mow Cop

Harris Head, Stadmoreslow, Wolstanton, Staffordshire

Mow Cop is very close to Odd Rode and Hall Green, on the border of Cheshire and Staffordshire

Ignore the last suggestion. Richard appears on the 1881 census with his parents and cannot, therefore, be the man who married in 1880.

Sorry

Hi,

Thank you both for your suggestions.  Posteria, I was very interested in your reply as it was the only the only one that came from the correct birth place.  I then saw your second reply.  What a shame!  Ah well that's genealogy for you and me and everyone else.

And Alli, thank you for your help.  That is the line I am following and I am waiting for the marriage certificate of George R Cooke and Mary Eliza Hodgkinson.  Now very worried about the postal service and whether I will receive it!

And yes I did have Cooper/Brundrick but cannot find Brundricks anywhere previously but there are millions of Coopers.

I am wondering about George Cooke's parents now ( John Cooke and Ann Jane Shaw )  It seems that they didn't marry until Jun 1864 and there are two possible deaths in Mar 1865 and Mar 1868.  Either death could be right but it seems strange that they didn't marry until 1864 when the first child was born in 1856.  On the 1861 census they appear to be married.  Maybe the first death is correct and they married as she was dying ?  All conjecture of course,

I have received the marriage certificate of George Richard Cooke and Mary Eliza Hodgkinson in 1880 in the parish of Kidsgrove, Staffs.  His father's name is, guess what? George! Deceased.  So I have searched every place I can think of for a George Cooke born prior to 1840 and have come up with nothing.  I thought I'd have one more shot on here and if nothing comes up I will have to send for George junior's birth cert with father as George.   I believe you can ask for the father's name if you don't have the code.
Cheers, hoping someone can find him,
