Rev. Thomas Hutchings Unicorn Yard Chapel
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 15:52 UTC (UK) »

Hello    Just connected the Rev. Thomas Hutchings to My family thru Google books and the Baptist Magazine.  He married Mary Clark Nabbs of Rye, Sussex in1793.  Thomas died in 1827 and is buried in Bunhill.  Mary is living at Rothbury House in Southwark in 1841 census independent means.  Can't find any mention of Mary being buried in Bunhill with Thomas.   Looking for info on Unicorn Yard where he served for 32 years, Rothbury House and son W. who was publishing fathers sermons.   thank you very much  LizR

Hi

Have you obtained a copy of Thomas' Prerogative Court of Canterbury will?

Will of Reverend Thomas Hutchings, Dissenting Minister of Bermondsey , Surrey 07 July 1827 PROB 11/1728

Thank you so much for your reply.  When I checked it the last time I didn't know about the Rev. part.  I will order that pronto.  Spent an hour on A*** at the library looking for the son W. but no luck.  There is a William Henry Hutchings associated with the Oxford Movement  ends up the Archdeacon of Cleveland but I have no dates of birth or death or parentage on him so can't move on.      LizR

Hi mariner,

Not sure if this is relevant, but Unicorn Yard was just off Tooley Street between Stoney Lane & Vine Lane. Apart from the large Brewery, the most noteable building in the 1872 OS map is Green School, a Roman Catholic school. There was a contempory (1842) watercolour painting:

Stoney Lane was later renamed Abbots Lane. Recently the area has been redeveloped and is part of the Potters Field and new London City Hall complex.

Also on the same site is a watercolour from 1826 of the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Unicorn Yard which from reading other posts, might be more relevant:

Just what I am looking for.  Thomas died in 1827 after having a stroke in the pulpit so print was his time.  Mary Clark Nabbs Hutchings was sister to Henry Clark of Rye Sussex my 4 greats grandfather.  This is my only known London connection.    Thank you for that info   LizR

Hi

Depending where you are in the world this may not be immediately helpful but I would read the last section of the topic on wills at the top of the London and Middlesex Look up Requests board

A GUIDE TO WILLS IN THE LONDON AREA

The last section is on Death Duty Registers. The National Archives does not have an electronic index to the Death Duty Registers for PCC wills.

Hello Valda,  I'm on the west coast of US so no local searching for me.  The will menitioned Public Funds and property  no details since he left everything to his wife and to be spilt up share and share alike between the six children.    Trying to find descendents who might know the stories behind my facts.    All I knew when i started was my 2 greats grandmother was born in Sussex in 1814.   Thank you for all your work on the board.  Rooschat is the best.   LizR
