Looking for shipwreck info
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 16:45 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find details of a shipwreck; however I don't know many details other than the fact the ship was a Liverpool merchant vessal.

According to the family bible from his daughter, John Davies was lost at sea off "the hook" of Rotterdam in November 1883. According to the entry, most of the crew survived but "the captain went down with the ship as was tradition in those days." Other than a note that her mother spent a small fortune on divers in an unsuccessful attempt to recover his body, there is no other information.

Does anybody know where I might be able to find more information on this? Are there any collections of records of ships and captains from Liverpool lost at sea?

Thanks!

Ryan
There are a couple of books which list ships lost at sea, one is something like a Dictionary of Disasters, which you might be able to get via inter-library loan, if you are in UK.
Another source would be Lloyd's Register of Shipping, but I am not sure where you would find that.
Someone may be able to advise on where to look for death registration of those who died outside UK.
Was John Davies the captain?

Hi Ryan,
There are several John Davies' in deaths at sea.
The two nearest in date
John  Davies (master) age 35 Drowned 29/11/1881  MARTIN (9347)
"         "            "         age33 Supposed drowned 26/5/83   ARDENTINNY (63799)

Not sure what numbers denote.
Others died in1876,1879,1884.

Probably not your John as dates slightly out but you never know.

The numbers are probably the vessels' registered numbers.

Thanks for the info! I think I found a good match, the only problem is that the family bible lists John Davies as the captain, but the master of the Condor was not John Davies (according to the Lloyd's register). However, the date and location look correct, so I would assume that this has to be the right ship. I had to go back through some old notes to find the name "Condor" which was errenously listed as HMS Condor by my grandfather despite the fact it was a merchant ship.

So, now I guess the challenge will be figuring out how to find out John Davies' position on the ship since history and family history don't seem to match here.  Smiley

Hi
Ahh, thanks Hibee.
There is a snippet on google books about the Ardentinny, an iron barque of 377 register tonnes, sold late 1882 to Peacock and Co and lost in 1883.
Owned by Pacific Steam Company, a commercial shipping co.
Totally supposition but if it was lost in May 1883 would it take time to be confirmed as lost, perhaps the family didnt know for sure till November.
Need to establish where it was wrecked really to count or discount it

Hello Ryan,

This from the Bristol Mercury + Daily Post, November 27 1883, mentions John Davies as the Chief Officer of the Condor

Hello again,

I'm lucky to be able to access the Gale "19th Century British Newspapers" website through my local library.  All you need is a library ticket, and you can use it online.  I'm not sure how many libraries subscribe to it, but I've found it really useful!

Was it the right John Davies?

Well done!  A chief officer would probably hold a master's ticket, which might explain that misunderstanding.

Can I just suggest that the idea of the master "going down with his ship" does not seem to be the norm. I think it only happened if the man realised he had made a dreadful error to cause the loss and could not face the shame etc. Losses were so commonplace in sail that it was just a normal hazard of the job and many masters lost a number of ships and carried on.
