CRAXFORDs in Uppingham
« on: Thursday 10 September 09 07:57 UTC (UK) »

I would be most grateful for help in solving a conundrum which has arisen in one branch of our family. A contact on the south coast told me of her great grandmother, Anne, was born in 1834 to Nathaniel and Jane Craxford and living in Uppingham. I have traced Anne through several censuses but the information is confusing. In 1841 she had an older brother (William b abt 1831) but her mother was Elizabeth, a widow. The 1851 census gives their address as Beast Market, Uppingham. She married a butcher, John Munton, and for a time her mother lived with them in Harringworth, Northants. Elizabeth died in the Peterborough area in 1869.

I have obtained a number of certificates and this is where things start to get interesting. Anne's marriage certificate confirms her father's name as Nathaniel - a surveyor of roads. Elizabeth's death certificate indicates her to be the widow of _ Craxford, surveyor of roads. A Nathaniel Craxford, surveyor of roads, died in Uppingham (the town) in 1841 aged 71. A william Craxford died in Uppingham in 1849

I have obtained data from the Parish records in Gretton, Northamptonshire which shows the following:
Nathaniel Craxford was born in Gretton in 1771
Nathaniel Craxford m Ann Binder in Gretton in October 1792
Ann Craxford (of Uppingham, aged 59) was buried in Gretton in May 1829
Jane Craxford (of Uppingham, aged 41) was buried in Gretton in May 1834
Nathaniel Craxford (of Uppingham, aged 71) was buried in Gretton in April  1841
William Craxford (of Uppingham, aged 19) was buried in Gretton in December 1849

My hypothesis to explain all this is that Nathaniel was married three times: to Ann in 1792 (that we know about); to Jane  sometime after 1829 when Ann died - and had two children, William and Anne (and given the dates Jane could well have been a perinatal mortality victim);  and finally Elizabeth sometime after 1834.

There is no record in the Gretton records for:
Nathaniel marrying Jane
Nathaniel marrying Elizabeth
Baptisms for William or Anne

Are there any entries in the Uppingham Parish records or Bishops Transcripts to substantiate these events ?

Many thanks
Alan

Hi Alan,

From Uppingham Parish Registers

No.206 Nathaniel Craxford married Jane Binder both OTP by Banns 29 May 1830.

Witnesses: Benjamin Binder and Elizabeth Langley

I had previously sourced this as a result of a PM about 3 years ago. Give me a day or so and I will see what other Craxford references might be in the Uppingham PRs.

Regards

Hi Crowboy

That is most helpful but also begs the question whether Ann and Jane Binder were related (sisters? cousins? with Jane about 23 years younger than Ann)!!

Many thanks

Greetings Alan

In Uppingham PRs (DE 1784/9) we have William son of Nathaniel and Jane Craxford baptised 19 August 1830. Entry No. 694.

No sign of Anne or any other Craxford entries but I shall keep searching

That's been a very great help anyway - the branch has been corrected attached. No evidence of the two mssing data items on the Northamptonshire side of the border either

Cheers Alan
