Chris 1066: Need Help...Off topic
« on: Thursday 10 September 09 23:32 UTC (UK) »

I can't figure out who else to talk to on the whole of this site to make a suggestion.  I note that none of the British islands in the West Indies have any coverage.  Can't we change this?  Lots of us have connections to these islands and it would really, really make a difference.  Can you pass this request on to the powers that be?

Sorry to have to post off topic in the wrong place.

Asino

I think too that it would be useful to have an area particularly dedicated to the West Indies - perhaps a section called "West Indies - British Subjects".

(I was recently researching the Litteljohn family of Jamaica, and the just about the only place I could find information submitted by individuals was in Google books).

Chris:  I agree with you....a dedicated section just for the British West Indies and not mixed in with all other foreign countries.  I too have researched Jamaica and it's hard to find things, but there are old newspapers available for Jamaica and slave records showing slaves and planters.   Even the genealogistis in the islands themselves use one single rootsweb list and everthing is jumbled together (even though there was a lot of island hopping).  It's a mess (in my opinion).  There are some very good sources for many of these islands and I know tons of people would be interested in both the UK and US.   I personally have the Barbados worldgenweb site (which I'm getting ready to pull down and put elsewhere).  It is just pitiful that these islands aren't easily reachable because people do have a genealogical need and if we work together we could share our sources.  I personally have tons of stuff on Barbados so there must be others who have tons of stuff on the other islands.  I don't want to hog what I have...I want to share it, but there is no avenue for it.  Can you talk to someone about getting a dedicated list for the British West Indies?

Hi Asino,

I also agree we do need a West Indies board. I have a GG Aunt who married a gentleman from the West Indies. I am having trouble searching any information on him. My GG Aunt I`m sure died in Barbados but I cannot find any details for her death.
The best person to ask would be Trystan who is the owner of this site. A Personal message to him may do the trick.
I will get back to you when I find Trystan`s details so you can P.M him.

Had to edit as I was in a hurry and some of it didn`t make sense Grin

Yes, it's a perfectly valid request, which we'll have to give serious consideration of.

We have to be a little careful right at this moment in adding more boards however as the knock-on effect is poorer performance of the site.

We are however looking at a quicker server solution for RootsChat, so in all likelihood these are the kind of things that we can do when we do indeed move to a quicker server.

We have had many such requests for boards for individual countries, but, as Trystan has said, extra boards affect the performance, so we compromised by creating the Other Countries board.

Please read the introductory topic on that board, for tips on how to sort by countries:
Topic: ** Using this board / alphabetic sorting **
