Mortimer Maurice, minister of Chester
« on: Friday 11 September 09 09:20 UTC (UK) »

I have been chasing my Maurice family for a while and thought I had them sussed.
My Mortimer Maurice was born in Bristol about 1797, he was a son of Joseph Maurice and Elizabeth Gillam. He married Catherine Cromwell there in 1821.
With a name like Mortimer Maurice it should be fairly easy. I have a record of him as a minister at Crooks Street Chapel for over 17 years. In 1851 he is recorded as working as a tutor in Flint, Wales.
There is sadly another Mortimer Maurice born in 1808 or 1809, he was a son of Samuel Maurice and Theodosia Bache  and I have just discovered he was a Reverend, he married a Mary Ann Marsden in 1835 in Bolton le Moor?, Lancashire.
I now realise that the Mortimer at the Chesire Chapel and also the tutor in Flint may be the other Mortimer and not my one.
I am sure they are cousins, the unusual name being only 10 years apart.
Can anyone see a census result in Chesire for a Reverend Mortimer Maurice, it would be his age and the name of his wife which would clinch it as to whether it was my Mortimer or the other one.
Just to really confuse the issue my Mortimer and Catherine had a son also named - guess what - Mortimer!
He was born in Bristol in 1822 and he was also a reverend, he married Lavinia Riley in 1855, he served in Hotwell in Bristol, Crantock, Cornwall, St Bude's in London.
I know there is a Welsh link as Mortimer's parents Joseph (he was a medical man) and Elizabeth are buried in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.
It would be nice to sort out what has just occurred to me today - that it may not have been my Mortimer and Catherine Maurice in Chester.

king william, here is what I found in the 1841 census for Cheshire
Ref: HO107/0130/F?
St Nicholas Chester
Maurice Mortimor (mistransciption)  30 Dissenting Minister born in County Nicholas Street, Chester
Mary Maurice 30 Not born county
Emily 4 Born in County
Susan 3 Born in County
Mary 1 Born in County
Ellen 1 month Born in County

I presume you have Catherine with son Mortimer on the 1851 in Clifton
I also found the children of Catherine on the 1841 with a Mary Cromwell independant means
Do you have this 1841 reference if not I will post it.

Many thanks for this, it does sort out just which Mortimer it was and it wasn't mine. The name of Mary as his wife well and truly decides it is not my man.
I do have the 1851 record thanks to a previous query of mine on the Glos. board.
Do you have access to the Hope, Flintshire census records which show a Mortimer Maurice working as a tutor in 1851, his age should decide which Mortimer it is. If mine, he would be about 54 or 55. If you could check up on that it could help.
I know he died at St Erth Vicarage in 1858 at 61 years of age.
Maybe I am back to square one as to his career.
Many thanks

Sorry to double up like this, but could I please take you up on your kind offer to please post the children of Catherine on the 1841 which also mentions Mary Cromwell,  just so I can check it is what I already do have
Thanks

Hi, kingwilliam, no trouble here is what I found:
1841  census HO107 Piece: 970 Folio 27 Page 4
Parish of Walcot Somerset looks like Castle Place
Mary Cromwell 55 independant Not born in county
Mortimer Maurice 15 (probably rounded to this age) Not born county
Mary Maurice 13 Born in County
on the 1851 census Mortimer Maurice in Flintshire Tutor is shown as 45 born Bristol
I will look again for Catherine and Mortimer on the 1841 and see if they come up with any other spellings of their last name as I couldn't find them on the 1841 on my initial searches.  I wonder why their children are with Mary Cromwell and not with them?  I wonder if they were not in this country??
Hope this helps

king william,  I looked again at the 1841 census and all I could find was the following, which might just confuse or confirm further:
Reference:
HO107/0983/2/F15
Walsall, Staffordshire, Freer Street
James Maurice aged 40 Dissenting Minister born Wales
No other Maurices in the house

Hi Kathb,
Many thanks for this, obviously the Mortimer who was a tutor in Flint was the other Mortimer and not mine as mine would have been 54 or 55 by 1851.
I do not know who James Maurice was but there it is again the Wales and also the dissenting minister career.
I have had information before on Rootschat about this family, it is just that now I am finding that some of it belongs to the other Mortimer.
I know that the Mary Cromwell the children were with in 1841 was the aunt of Catherine Cromwell and I have never known just how many children Mortimer and Catherine had, maybe it was just Mortimer Jnr. and Mary who was apparently Mary Cromwell Maurice and she was born in Bath in 1830. She was unmarried and was a governess all her working life.
I now also do not know what my Mortimer was doing all those years, but I did have one kind lady from this site a while ago give me some information about Catherine - as a widow in 1861, she was listed as Catherine Morris and was a lodger, supported by friends and lived with a family named Sydenham of Clifton in Bristol.
There is also a Frederick Sydenham Maurice of 1850 of St Geo. Hanover Square, not sure if he fits in anywhere.
By 1871 maybe she has fallen on her feet and is once again listed as Catherine Maurice and is aged 72, living in some villas in Sydenham with her daughter, and her income is "Private."
The upshot after all this is, my Mortimer did not seem to be very well recorded, they maybe only had two children who did not appear to spend much time with them.
Now I do not know too much about his life except he was a son of an esteemed medical man Joseph Maurice, and his brother William was a surgeon of Bristol and he died in a vicarage in St. Erth in Cornwall
Many thanks for your help, I am in New Zealand, so not close to the action. I may try to contact any Maurice family living in Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire who may have some family history conveniently lying around.

Hi, king william.   No problem, glad to be of a little help.  This is quite a puzzle.  I am not sure if you have the following:
Reference: HO107/1952 page 34
On the 1851 census Catherine is living with their son Mortmer Maurice unmarried aged 29 Curate of Trinity Church ?Hotwell, Clifton. Born, Bristol.
They are living at 6 the Polygon in Clifton, Bristol
On this census Catherine is noted as married, aged 51 born Marksbury, Somerset also in the house is Mary C, unmarried aged 21 sister to Mortimer born Bath.
Presumably as Catherine states married, Mortimer senior is still alive.
In the house are also a cook and housemaid.
I will keep looking for Mortimer senior and let you know if I have any luck

Hi, king william, here are a couple more resources that I found which may assist in future generations.
I found the first by googling Mortimer Maurice an entry in a Cornish newspaper as follows: 1887
MAURICE – CLACK – At St. Philip's Church, Sydenham, June 13, Gerald Joseph Foster, third son of the late Rev. Mortimer Maurice (formerly vicar of Crantock), to Ada Clements, daughter of Charles Henry Clack, of Sydenham.
The second resource is the national archives if you enter the name in the top right search box several references to documents and a medal card appear for the name.

King William
I read your topic with interest and noticed the death that Kathb sent.So I thought i might find it in the a paper or 2, I didn't Sad Mainly because there are a lot of years missing. However i did find about 50 references to the name Maurice Mortimer had a quick read through most Smiley. In various places,Cornwall,Wales Wrexham (lots) Surrey +London
Most of them are connected with wales.I only found a couple of ,Previously of Chester.I found some Marriages and deaths
on the way

Married 22nd November 1855 at Clifton. The Rev; Mortimer Maurice M.A Curate of Trinity Church Hotwells.
To Lavinia second daughter of the late Thomas Riley Esq of Abby house in bermondsey surrey.

Also, if you have a connection with the Wrexham  family I found a marriage in Brussels of an Emily eldest daughter of Mortimer Maurice of wrexham.

If any of these are connected to you family I can copy (by snap) and email them to you, not all 50 Grin. You can then add any new information to your topic.Let me know then i can send bit by bit as it will take some time.

Many thanks for this kathb, will have a look at it, being in NZ, you have no idea just how lovely it is to be able to go on a site like and ask a question and receive an answer just like that and by such helpful people.
I remember him trying to do his own line by writing to some people in Suffolk and waiting months for an answer. if a reply came at all.
This Maurice line is the line of my children on their father's side.
My father was a schoolteacher and a historian who gave university lectures on local history, he was passionate about history.
He would not have believed this wonderful email system as he died in 1988.

Hi, King William, you are most welcome. I agree with you that this site is wonderful.  I have been helped so much in the past by rootschatters and still ask for assistance.  For this reason I try to help when I can to repay some of the generosity of the rootschatters in the time they have spent in helping me.
The internet is wonderful.  I am fortunate in that the local archives (with much of my family history) are within travelling distance.  I am sure that rootschatters will continue to do their best to help you particularly with you being so far from the family history information you need.
