Edith Findlay
« on: Saturday 12 September 09 21:23 UTC (UK) »

Hello

I am trying to find a marriage between a Edith Findlay , maiden name unknown , and another man ( who is unknown) by the name of (First name) Findlay , he may have been called Alexander after his son Alex Findlay born in 1905.They would have wed in Lurgan in Co down.

Also Looking on the 1911 census shows that edith is widowed so finding a name for the father has been a trouble

Any more information needed just ask.

Thanks David Donald

If you open the 1911 Census you will see the relationship to Edith is the daughter of William Hamilton the head of house.

If you click of the Household Return (Form A) you will see the pdf scan of the original census. Appears Ediths mother was born in Co.Antrim and lots other information on the census form.

Appears there was a mistake between the relationship between Alexander and his grandfather William as if has him down as his nephew. I have seen this mistake a good few times incase you were wondering.

You can order the marriage cert by given the GRO
http://www.groireland.ie/

The following information Alexander Finley and Edith Hamilton Volume 1 Pg 947 Lurgan Registration District Date: 0ct-Dec 1904 or the date given above by OTTO.

There is a William John Hamilton marrying a Ellen McMullen in 1871 Lurgan Registration District Volume 16 Pg 908 you can order this marriage record in similar way. They were living in Warringstown area which is the same as the couple in the 1911 Census.
When order marriage records it helps to include the volume number and page number, registration district and date/year/quarter on the application form.

I found this William Henry Hamilton born 18 Sep 1874 son of William John Hamilton and Ellen McMullen Warringtown Lurgan Co.Down. Also Mary Hamilton born 25 Oct 1872 daughter of Willaim John Hamilton and Ellen McMullen Warringtown Down.

Here appears to be the birth and death of Alexander Findlay/Finlay

Alexander Finlay
Death: Jan-Mar 1905 Lurgan Registration District
Age 21 Volume 1 Page 576

Alexander Finlay
Birth Apr-Jun 1883 Lurgan Registration District
Volume 1 Page 715

There appears to be three Hamilton Families in Corcreeny in Griffiths Valuation with the head of house being David, Nicholas and James.

Alexander Finlay

Alexander Finlay looks very much like the son of Samuel Finlay and Margaret Watson who lived in Ballydougan, Co. Down in the 1870's.  The family attended the Knocknamuckley church. Samuel was born in Co. Down and Margaret in Co. Armagh.  The marriage record might prove this.

By 1900 Samuel and family are living on Victoria St. in Lurgan.  Alexander is described as a power loom tenter who is 17.  His brother William married into my Hart family.

The names in the Finlay family are so similar to that of William John Finlay and Elizabeth Smith of Ballynagarrick (Knocknamuckley church, again)including the name Alexander and Phenia.  I would assume a connection.  McCulloughs marry into that family, too.

Is a tenter a tender of power looms?

Thanks very much for the information

Yes Mary Hamilton married James Sandes in 1907 and resided in 1911 in Moygannon, Donaghcloney. This is the eldest of William John Hamiltons Children.

KatC- This intrests me , the Finlay ties , it is also to note the early death of Alexander Finlay at only 22 in 1905, which was very abrupt when I found out.

Gerald A Murphy- Thank you for transcribing that 1911 census of the hamiltons family, Ellen who was born in Co Antrim was a complete surprise to be as I had found a birth of her in Waringstown in 1851 of the name of ellen Mc Mullan.I was wondering how this is?

And also the three brothers Nicholas, James and David ,

Thanks David

and also I just thought a tender of power looms is just someone who looks after them and keeps them running.

Also I should note that Alexander Findlay or Finlay born in 1905, emigrated to Australia in 1925 to Melbourne on the ss berrima.

Hello

KatC - Do you have any other information on Alexander Finlays Life before his death in 1905?

Also I would like to find out the reason for Ellen McMullans birth place as Co Antrim , when there is a birth for her in 1851 in Waringstown? That information was from LDS.

Thanks DD

There are 2 types of LDS information- extracted (taken from records) and submitted (can be correct but can also be estimated data from submitter).

To confirm her likely place of birth (since civil registration of births didn't start until 1864) you'll need to see if a baptismal record from a church exists.
