Hi Lorraine,

Ontario births are available to 1912, marriages to 1927 and deaths to 1937.

http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/archival-records/interloan/vsmain.aspx

Anything over those years you have to order directly from the Province of Ontario  www.serviceontario.ca

Ancestry has Ontario certificates and the following site has them as well, just not the original documents and it's not complete http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onvsr/

Keep in mind that certificates after the dates that Karen mentioned are protected by privacy laws. Only certain people are entitled to order a copy. Make sure you read the FAQ at the Service Ontario site to see if you are eligible.

The LDS has Ontario death records 1869-1947 online for free: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=allCollections;r=0

ancestry.ca has almost all of the BMDs which are available to the general public online (not free, but cheap).

Unlike the UK, the Canadian government Ontario government does not produce certificates for records which have been sent to the archives, the best you can get for these records is a print from a microfilm copy.

That depends on the province. The registration of BMD events is a provincial responsibility. While some provinces transfer BMD records to their provincial archives after a certain amount of time, some don't.
