World War 2 Records
« on: Friday 25 September 09 13:13 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I have just replied to an earlier posting re WW1 records with my experience over the past week & thought it worth noting my experience attempting to get my father's NZRAF record from Defence from WW2.

I sent a request to Trentham, noting my relationship. and all relevant details. I received a reply saying "... not to be released as there is no proof of his death on record..".

I had to gather Death Cert, Funeral Notice and Burial Cremation details to "prove" his demise!

I'd be interested to know if there is any requirement to inform Defence of the death of a former serviceman ? If so my family certainly didn't comply at the time!

Hi

Just a different avenue regarding our WWI and WWII men and woman

On Wednesday I spent an excellent few hours at the Auckland Museum, our convener JoAnne (Mercury Bay) arranged a tour with Christina from the Armoury which hosts the Cenotaph Database.

Using the Cenotaph Database at the Armoury which relates to their library and archives a lot more information can be found.  My big find was a book written in 1893 by a family member regarding a world trip, I knew about it, but to find it here was priceless.

You can also help the Armoury by sending details including death date of your family members that served in WWII which will then be placed on the Cenotaph Database, don't forgot a photo.

Thanks heaps Christine
