Mary Ann Owens - The bravest woman I never knew

Cambuslang Churches, School Records
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 14:17 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

My mum has given me another mission. I admit I do not know where to begin with it so any help to shed light on the avenues I should take to explore would be welcomed Smiley

We are trying to find out about her grandmother, Ann Quinn, who was born on February 20 1904, a twin of Margaret Quinn born half an hour later on the same day. The births are listed as being at 42 Hallside, Newton, Cambuslang. Does anybody have any idea where Ann's Roman Catholic parents of Irish descent would have had her baptised, confirmed, and where she may have made her First Holy Communion? I am also trying to find out which school she would have attended and how I can get hold of these records...Cambuslang is not the closest place for me I am afraid Sad

Ann later married William McCartney, a tube worker, and then had two children, William in 1928 d2003 and Henry born 1931 d1946. Both boys were born in Rutherglen and if anybody has the same sort of records for these two boys, it would be great if you could point me in the right direction to obtain/order them if necessary.

Thanks for reading this post, I look forward to some advice on how to keep mum quiet for a few weeks Wink

Regards,
Matt Smiley

Hi sancti,

Thanks for the two links there. I will phone St Columcille's tomorrow as I think that was where my grandfather was baptised.

I will also need to contact St Bride's I shall do that in due course too.

Thanks again,

Hi Matt,

The Mitchel Library in Glasgow hold a load of the old school records in their archive section, so it may be worth sending them an email.

Regards the baptism / communion records the Scottish catholic Archives in edinburgh are working with Scotlands people to have their records on the SP site hopefully by the end of this year.
What records are available and how detailed all depends on what records the actual parish kept and retained for that period. So keep your eyes peeled on SP.

Thanks Gerry,

I will send the Mitchell an email about school records, I will probably visit in late October anyway as I will be in Glasgow for the weekend (funds willing!)

St Columbkille's in Rutherglen were kind enough to send me my grandfather's baptism and confirmation certificate, as well as his brother's! It has given us alot of answers but as always leads on to two more questions Cheesy

Thanks for all of your help,
