Joseph Outram -which colliery did he manage ?
« on: Sunday 13 September 09 21:07 UTC (UK) »

My ancestor, Joseph Outram ( born West Melton 1845, married to Ann Eggleston ) was, by 1891, a colliery manager living in Rawmarsh at Beechwood House.

I'd like to find which colliery he managed. I've gone to National Archives, Googled and looked at various pit history websites but have drawn a blank.

There was a Joseph Outram awarded the Edwards Medal for his efforts, with the Tankersley Rescue Squad, in the mine disaster at Hamstead near Birmingham in 1908. I don't think it was my Joseph as he would have been 63 at the time and the photos of the event show a man of about 45.

Please can anyone suggest a next step ?

Thanks

Hi Grizzly, Would the Local Studies Library closest to where he lived have anything that might give you a lead?   I have always found them very helpful- and especially when you can tell them that you have hunted hard yourself for the info.

Will do !

Joseph had a pretty poor start in life- an illegitimate twin- so it is great to see him rise so high. I've just been looking for present day details of the house he lived in and it was on the market recently for £1 million.

Another interesting question about the 19th C is how many people who came from very humble moneyless circs ended up with absolutely heaps of dosh.
I guess they were entrepreneurial and siezed the Indust. Rev's opportunities.

Another thing I wonder about is how in the very early 19th C  the children of weavers were literate. Where did they learn to write, and develop such clear well formed writing?

So many questions Roll Eyes

Let's have a guess that in 1891 he wouldn't have been travelling too far to work (transport?). So the nearest collieries to Rawmarsh would have been, New Stubbin, Aldwarke and Kilnhurst; there are a handfull of collieries a little further affield; Silverwood, Wath, Manvers and Cortonwood.  I will check that these were working in 1891.

Have just found another colliery - previously unknown to me. not far from the top of Rawmarsh hill is Warren vale road. (In my youth it was regularly by the local youth used to show how fast they could drive), however it seems that there was a Warren Vale Colliery there.

A thousand thanks !

I've got him- at Warren Vale in 1896. There were 692 men working at the mine and the manager is given as  J. Outram.

Now for the death date and will...!

Thanks again to everyone for your help.

One very happy Grizzly !
