How to Find Where Buried?
« on: Monday 14 September 09 02:17 UTC (UK) »

I'd really like to get pictures of my grt grt grandparent's gravestones (if they exist), but don't have a clue how to determine where they are buried.  Is there a government office to query in Orkney?

Here are details:  John Manson b ca 1840-41 died 10 Jan 1931 District of Firth.  Death reg. states he died "Lighthouse, Firth, Usual residence Firthside, Firth".  Death was registered at Finstown.

His wife, May Flett Manson, b. 1833 died 23 Nov 1912 at Firthside Cottage, Firth and was registered at Finstown.

I was a bit surprised that the cemetery was not defined on the death registrations.

Thanks!

Hi! have had a look at finstown memorial inscriptions but the only ones that I can find are; In loving memory of margaret ann marwick wife of william manson born at lighthouse 2nd sept 1872 died there 6th nov 1922, also the above william manson born at deepdale stromness 29 july 1864 died at burness cottage 31st july 1949, their daughters emmalina died 14 oct 1975 aged 75 margaret ann died 14th july 1978 73yrs

manson. in loving memory of sydney g m manson died 28.4.93 aged 85 husband of frances m low 3.4.94 aged 81

Theses are the only 2 with a reference to lighthouse, firth, they might be familiar to you. Your best bet is to try orkney family history society, thats where I got these from ( their memorial transcriptions )

akc,

Thanks you for the info.  This does help since William was the second son of John and May, and my great grandfather's older brother.  I did not know the names of Emmalina and Margaret Ann altho I communicated with their other sister Jane until she died in the mid 1990s.  Surprisingly, none of William's 4 children married.

I had looked at the Orkney Heritage site and was unsure of which of the many (and relatively pricey) books to purchase for the Stromness area.

Regards,

Nick

It is cheaper to join the ofhs, you get access on line to most of the transcribed memorial inscriptions, census info and family trees ( saves you buying a lot of booklets) they dont have all the memorials listed but will be able to tell you where to find others or if they have been listed. ( They do have the Finstown ones though )

Yes, I really should join OFHS.  Since I am spoiled by being able to do most things online using a debit card, their requirement for sending a check and a printed form is a bit off-putting.
