Confused!!

While investigating my wife`s grandad Fred Lane b 1886 approx
I found on his birth certificate his mother Charlotte Lane b 20/7/1867 but no father
However on his marriage certificate his father is given as Robert Lane
As Charlotte`s father is given as Thomas Lane on her certificate which makes her a Lane at birth I am confused as to her & Robert`s relationship pre marriage
Were they cousins

It would be worth investigating the census to see if a Robert Lane existed. 

Who was Charlotte living with in 1891?

It might also be worth looking for Fred's baptism to see if a father is mentioned.

It's possible that Fred invented a father when he married to save face.

If this is your Charlotte marrying, wonder why Fred didnt tag along, or had something happened by 1901 ?
