Hi there
I wonder if anyone can help with some information, or can point me in the right direction.
I have found a potential relation in the 'Girls Refuge, Ardmillan Terrace, Edinburgh' but can't find any information at all on it.
I hope one of you knowledgeable people out there can help.
Thanks in anticipation. Janice

Thanks for your reply Thinlizy. The link is very interesting.
I have some other information which states that it was adjacent to the Magdalene Asylum.
It seems to have had lots of different names:
Girls House of Refuge, Ardmillan Terrace; Western Reformatory; Dalry Girls Reformatory
Would you, or anyone else, know where I could find any more information about the place, or where the records would be?
Thanks a lot.
Janice

Hi Janice
The National Archives of Scotland do hold some papers on Reformatory schools and refuges.
http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/
eg AD56/60 AD59/25 ED15 GD425/35 GD409/5/3 ED15/383
There are many more of a general nature and this referencing Magdalene Home Dalry: E859/227
Also a few more links:

http://hsewsf.sedsh.gov.uk/hslive/hsstart?P_HBNUM=26743
http://www.institutions.org.uk/reformatories/ref/reformatory_staff.htm
I have seen references to a reformatory at Loanhead, and just to cause confusion "In the late 19th century it operated as "The Edinburgh Girls' Reformatory and House of Refuge for Female Delinquents", changing the name to Dalry House." http://www.midlothianadvertiser.co.uk/news/End-of-era-for-Loanhead.4170122.jp
Hope this helps

Dear Kirsty
Thank you very much for this brilliant list. It is much appreciated.
I wouldn't know where to start to know where to search for things like this.
Do you have any hints you can give me, as to how to search please?
Thanks loads.
Janice

Hi Janice
There is a section (which I keep forgetting to look at) called Scotland Resources on Rootschat, which is full of useful links.
Over time I have built up a list of useful websites, but if a topic is unfamiliar I use Google! Use quotation marks to search for exact spellings or to group words as phrases on google, eg when I searched for Ardmillan Terrace I got far too many hits which only contained one of the words, so I made it "ardmillan terrace" and narrowed my search parameters.
If anything is in Scotland I check the NAS, especially anything to do with official institutions/schools/etc. It's best to start by searching for a general term and narrow it down if you get too many results. Sometimes only search by one word to begin with. As you have seen in this case the reformatory was known by more than one name so it helps to check all of them. I think i did separate searches for "refuge", "Reformatory" and "dalry" to get most of the references I posted.
Local council/Library websites can sometimes have good bits and pieces, depends on the area.
The National Library of Scotland have a fabulous set of historical maps available online which can be of great help. One of my favourites is http://geo.nls.uk/os6inch/google.html as you don't have to restrict your search to a small area on one sheet, or even know which county the place is in!
Canmore is great when you want to know about a building over time and get a bit of background.
Cassel's Old and New Edinburgh is a set of 7 volumes which I think should be compulsory reading for anyone doing research on old Edinburgh! It's an absolute treasure trove. There is a great deal to be said for understanding the culture of a place and time, and not imposing modern interpretations and preconceived ideas on information you find.
You should always bear in mind that spellings have varied greatly over the years and handwritten documents can be mistranscribed, so don't worry if things don't match exactly. If you are struggling to find something or someone under the spelling you have found try thinking of how it might have sounded spoken with different dialects and enter variations based on that.
The most important thing you need for this is patience!
I have been known to sit though well over 50 pages of results until I found what I wanted. Yes I am nuts, but it gets results (some of the time).
This can be like a jigsaw puzzle where you first have to do a treasure hunt to find the pieces - and you don't know what the picture looks like.
I hope I haven't put you off too much and some of this was helpful.
Kirsty

Dear Kirsty
Thank you so much for your message. It is absolutely brilliant and really helpful.
You haven't put me off searching at all. Quite the opposite, as I will maybe get some good results using your tips.
I am really grateful that you have taken the time and trouble to put all this information together for me.
I also think that there will be a lot of other people who will be extremely interested to read what you have said, and will also find it of great help to them.
Thanks again. Much appreciated.
regards Janice
