Sarah Clewes (yes, another Clewes!)
« on: Monday 14 September 09 17:37 UTC (UK) »

These Clewes' will drive me to more grey hair!

I am looking for Sarah Clewes b. 1856 in Upper Canada to Agnes Wright and John Harrison Clewes.  She appears on the 1861 and 1871 census but not on the 1881.

The sticky bit might be that Agnes and John were not married until 1859 - shouldn't make a difference as she appears on the early census'.

Any help is (again) grately appreciated.

Link to an online family tree with your Clewes family.  They show a date of death of 7 Sep 1916 for Sarah and date of death for Ethel 10 Jan 1962.

Probably worth pursuing

Thank you , Debbie, actually the person who did this tree is my brother in law!  He has alot of info but no sources and that's what I am trying to follow up on.  Not to say his info  correct or not, but I like to see where the info came from!

The Ontario death registration #005611 for Sarah Clewes d. Sept 7, 1916 at Western Hospital Toronto, York ties in with the information on your brother-in-law's tree.  It shows her as age 60, born England, Buried Prospect Cemetery, widow.  Informant was A.W. M(?)iles of 396 College St..  Cause Cerebral hemorraghe, 24 hours.

Thanks Debbie.  Not sure this is the correct Sarah.  It says she was a widow.  Wouldn't her married name be on her death cert?

I wouldn't be convinced that this is your Sarah either.  It does seem to be the death certificate that your brother-in-law might be using.    There are no parents names to tie it in with your family and unless she was born Clewes and married a Clewes it doesn't really seem to fit.

Yes, Agnes must have been one tough cookie!  13 children in all!  She has Sarah in 1856 which is 3 years before she marries John and then it's not for another 3 years until she has her next child, Jessie.

John is listed on the 1861 Canadian census as a tinsmith and it's on this census that we see Sarah, though I can't read where her place of birth is.  It may not be in Canada.

Still, I'd like to find her marriage and/or death notices if possible!

Thanks for your help, J.J.!

Sorry I haven't found anything...was trying Manitoba as:

found Jessie Dixon there in 1891 http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1891/001081-119.02-e.php?person_id_nbr=226510
also Florence Berryman marries ARTHUR WOLSEY ADAMS 06/07/1910 in Winnipeg
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca//Query.php

She may also have used a middle name which all seem to have...which would make things even harder...

Hi Jacquie!

Jessie was Sarah's sister.

Seems Sarah has fallen off the planet ...

Now, when searching death notices, is it better to put in the maiden name of a female relative or the married name?  Which one is used in the indexing?

I wanted to find the connection to Clewes & Manitoba...so I dug around a bit to see if she was in the home of any of the married Clewes, to no avail...
But then... remember Jessie was in the home of a Dagg family in 1891?
Well, later in life...she remarries to a Thomas G. Dagg1

So I hadn't checked who the head of household was in 1891, but thought I'll look intot the 1901 for this Thomas G. Dagg...and there is is with a wife Sarah H. who was born Oct. 26th 1856 in Ontario....
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=20771&highlight=2

so I am all excited, and so look for a marriage in Manitoba...but none showing for even Thomas alone...so I look in order for births of the children from the census, and she puts her surname as Dagg...on all but thankfully the birth of Walter Harrison dagg...Where she puts her name down as Sarah Harrison Clewes!!!!!

ah....my Clewes clues paid off today... Grin

also found that Sarah Harrison Dagg died in 1915, age 58....http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca

Thomas is living with parents James & Mary Ann in 1881...he's a butcher...so marriage may have been between the 1881 and 1885?
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e328/e008199718.jpg

Oh and back to that 1891 census husband is down as George Thomas! so i may have wrong man in 1881?
Nah, he's a butcher, so we have the right man...
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1891/001081-119.02-e.php?person_id_nbr=226504

In the marriage to Jessie his mother is down as Mary Rollins

this just might be the marriage mistranscribed:
George DAGG & Sarah CLEMIS married Nov. 25 1884
BRIDE'S GIVEN NAMES: SARAH   DATE OF MARRIAGE: 25/11/1884
WINNIPEG REG #1885,001647  http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca

plus I think I posted more to the above reply as you posted...I like to save room on a thread by doing multiple postings...
Chester & probably Georgie... 1911? Looks as though they might have fallen on some hard times? Or could you camp in the parks back then?
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=33020
Yes, I see that Boswell Marvin Russel married Georgie Dagg August 29 1906 Wpg

This thread says it may have been an amusement park/circus thing, but that would need to be proven...
also later on the comment "Housing was scarce in those days "
