Whordley - Staffordshire or Shropshire
« on: Monday 14 September 09 23:22 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to trace information on James Whordley (Wordley, Wardley).  He married in 1847 Shropshire to Elizabeth Underwood and on the marriage cert his father is named as James Whordley.  I would like to find out about his parents, I believe him to be born c1823 in Dawley/Stirchley depending on what census you look at. I have a possible sighting of him in 1841census with a widow mother, Elizabeth and sister Eliza Pitt. I also have a possible IGI but with parents James and Jane (married in Shropshire) but James jnr christened at Saint Peter Or Collegiate, Wolverhampton, Stafford, also sister Mary Ann christened there but can find no Eliza
Can anyone help?!!
Thanks

Hi Joanna

It is best just to post once for the information, in order to avoid duplication.

Have you searched for a will for the chap you think is the father?  Do you know what occupations he and James jr followed?  Does the marriage certificate say that James snr is deceased - as implied by your 1841 census finding?  Can you find the mother Elizabeth and sister Eliza in later censuses and is the James you saw in 1841 with them?  Does his occupation fit with the later censuses and/or marriage cert?  Alternatively have you found the James and Jane pairing on any census?

For James jr's birth you will need a baptism look-up: can you do this yourself or do you need someone local to help?

Please let us know what you've already tried and maybe locals can give you a hand with the rest.

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Hi Arranroots

I wasn't sure that Shropshire folk would look at the Staffordshire and vice versa Undecided

I've tried to answer your questions in order:
Occupations on marriage certs: James snr - Labourer (nor marked deceased), James jnr - Stock-taker. James jnr in 51 census - labourer in iron works, 61 census - furnaceman, death cert 1867 - stocktaker.
Eliza is living in Shropshire with husband Thomas in the 51 and found a possible death for mother Elizabeth in 1850.  In the 51 James jnr is living with wife and in-laws (he is down as Walley).  I have no doubt that I have the correct James jnr in the 51, 61 and marriage cert due to his wife.

The census details I've had for a while but no longer have access to Ancestry to check further details, however there does seem to be a consistancy of a James Wardle and Jane Wardle b1801, living in Staffordshire in the 41.  There is also a few James Wardle  but born 1816 which I think would be too early for James jnr. There doesn't seem to be anything in Shropshire except what has already been found.

I would appreciate if anyone locally could look up the baptism for James jnr, which might prove who his mother was if she's listed.

regards

Just found a James, Jane and Mary Ann Whordeley living in Staffordshire in the 1841 (although can't open to find out more).  On the IGI James and Jane had children James and Mary Ann.  No sign of James jnr though using that spelling!

Also think I've found Jane Wordley b1797 in the 51 living in Staffordshire - would someone be able to check these out for me please.

1841 entry for Wolverhampton - North Seisdon and East Cuttlestone and South Offlow.  Willnhall or Millnhall Lane

I personally do not think the surname is Whordeley.  The image looks more like Whambley or Whorbley.  It is a definite b not a d

James Whordeley 50  stone miner not b in county
Jane 50  not b in county
Mary Ann   15  born in county
George Badger 13 not b in county - stone miner

Thanks Carole

I guess Ann must be a sister to Thomas otherwise Mary Ann would have had her when she was 13! I've found an marriage entry for them on FreeReg in 1845 aged 19 and 18.

So now there is still the mystery of the 41 census and why James jnr put his home county as Shropshire when he must have been born in Staffordshire.

Well I've spent most of the day on this as have others and still at the back of my mind is that James jnr is listed as born and living in Shropshire in the census and got married in Shropshire, so despite not being able to find anything other than the 41 living with mother Elizabeth, I'm not sure Staffordshire can be right.

I'm going to put a request in Shropshire asking for someone to look up his baptism and Elizabeth's marriage  so unless you have anything you feel would help, I'll finish this thread.

Thanks for all your help
