Delanne's Scavenger Hunt....Everyone Welcome To Join In.
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 10:08 UTC (UK) »

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt and it's a rather special one.    This week you'll be looking for a 'live' sibling.   Now I know this is not usually done, but I think once you've read the post, you'll understand why.

I must remind you though, (not that you need a reminder .... but.... ) NOT to post any reference to a possible living person.  If you feel you may have the right information, then please PM Delanne giving details.........do not put it up on the board

Having said that, if you could even point Delanne in the right direction, I'm sure she will be delighted to follow all leads.

Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Barbara

                                           *****************************

Dear Rootschatters,
I am searching for a half sibling. I am 72 years old and was born an only child.

Some Rootschatters will know my uncle's name - Gilbert Harry, who died in 1931 after being in the First World War. He has since gained recognition in a ceremony which was performed in Gympie, Queensland, Australia in June this year.

His brother was Percy William Harry, my father. He was born on the 8th May 1891 in Swaffham, Middlesex, England. He was married in 1916 to a Florence Sabrina Quinion but I don't know how long this marriage lasted.

He served in WW1 and after the war between the years of 1920 and 1931 he travelled extensively, working for the Government as an electrical engineer. I have him on seven passenger lists going between England, Africa, Iran and the West Indies. In 1934 he and my mother from St Kitts, West Indies, formed a relationship resulting in my birth in 1936.

Earlier this year some Rootschatters became interested in the story of my Uncle Gilbert, during which time I came across a postem on Free BMD against my father's name -

"10/01/2007 This man was my father and he always celebrated his birthday on the 8th May and I think 1891 "

Unfortunately, I cannot find out the source of this postem. This person must know my father to have known his birth day as the index states the birth date as the September quarter 1891.

I don't know whether this person is male or female, or where he or she lives. Each time my father returned from his travels he gave the same address of 65 Chelverton Rd, Putney, London, SW1. This was between the mid 1920s until 1934 so maybe this baby was born around the Putney or Wandsworth areas at that time.

So the person who left the postem probably would have been born between 1928 and 1934.

I would be grateful to receive any little clue which could lead me to find this person.

Looking at his WW1 service records on Ancestry ( there are more than 1)
In 1919 he gives his wife's address 128 High St Hounslow as his home address. So it appears they were together then ( It also gives his pre war employer - the local council who requested his discharge as they were short of qualified staff and they wanted him back).

maybe if you can find our more about Florence esp. her death this may help narrow down a childs birth i wonder also if the he cold have had a relationship in between Florence and your mother?

The person who put the postem obvs. knows your father - does this mean he was in contact with them?

also if you are looking on Ancetsry BMD index the new version where ti lets you search MMN. then be carefult he images were fed into a PC and then read, they were not manually input so it may have read the Q as an O for example, try variants.

Florence Sabina Quinion b. 1895
Florence B Quinion m. 1916

so she died or were they divorced? between 1916 and 1936

try GRO Death index 1926 +/- 10 years for Florence Harry

Is FLorence named as his wife on Army papers?

if she died who registered her death.

It would be good to search the area they lived in but equally remember that deaths are registerd in the area they occurred so if she was away from home and deid it wold be registered there.

Do you have a marriage certificate for your parents?

it should state on there whether your father was divorced or widowed

Did your parents marry? i see you said they formed a relationship, if they ddint marry perhaps there was a reason for this such as he was already married to Florence.

Interesting!

Did Percy leave a will?  I wonder whether he might have named the relevant child there.

Florence Sabina Quinion b. 1895
Florence B Quinion m. 1916

She's Florence Sabrena QUINION on the marriage entry itself, so the B must be an indexing error.

This entry is a bit odd in Wandsworth...........  Huh  Huh

Births Dec 1932
 Harry Edwina L. Jewell Wandsworth ? see D/36

This entry appears to be a late entry however the entry referred to cannot be found, either because it is not identical to this entry or because it has not yet been transcribed.

             ~~~~~~~~
Possible late entry
Normally GRO Index page numbers are numeric, optionally followed by a letter. As this page number ('see D/36') does not follow this format it is possible that it is a Late Entry. Late Entries mean that the registration of the event was delayed, e.g. parents did not attend the Register Office to record a birth but the birth was registered much later when the child was about to begin work, or an Inquest after a death prevented the immediate issuing of a death certificate. A Late Entry attempts to show a searcher where to look for the actual GRO reference. Unfortunately the format of such Late Entries is not standardised, but the usual pattern is a letter showing the Quarter of the Registration [March (M), June (J), September (S) or December (D)] followed by the last two digits of the year, thus giving the quarter and year when the Registration was entered into the GRO records. A reference that reads 'see J/75' would therefore indicate that the GRO registration and reference is probably to be found in the June Quarter of either 1875 or 1975 (depending on context).
Does this mean Dec 1936.... ??
Yes Smiley
Unfortunately a red herring, I think, as there a Mar 1934 Harry/Jewell marriage which accounts for this - likely a re-registration after parents' marriage.  I won't post names but the father isn't Percy.
Lesanne with a 1932 birth you are sailing a bit close to the wind.
BTW If you follow it through the parents married in 1934 and so that child was born before their marriage.
