Hi
I can't see him in 1861 - perhaps that marriage certificate is the answer. Do you know Ellens maiden name?

Hi both,
There is a candidate on earlier censuses, born in Spittal Northumberland (in Berwick district):
1861 RG9/3888 8 10 Middle Street, Spittal Robert Swinney, lodger, 19, Iron moulder, b. Spittal
lodging with a Sweaton family.
1851 HO107/2421 246 6 Tweedmouth, Northumberland Spittal Jane Swinney, head, 32, Charwoman, b. Spittal William, son, 11, b. do. Robert, son, 9, scholar, b. do. John, son, 7, scholar, b. Lancashire Liverpool George, son, 5, scholar, b. do.
The Liverpool bit is interesting because Robert gives his birth place as Liverpool in 1891.
