Hi, it's my first post. Hugh Cull and Margaret Fitzsimmons are my great great great grandparents. I am descended from their son John who married Elizabeth Sloan also in Rostrevor in 1859. They moved to Scotland and had four sons as far as I am aware, one of whom is Stephen Cull (later McCall) my great grandfather. They settled in Lanarkshire and worked in the coalmines. If there is anything I can help you with I'd be glad to do so. Smiley

Hi mermin, thanks for your reply. I dont know where Margaret Fitzsimmons came from yet as I have only recently started to look into Irish genealogy sites - I may be wrong but the parish of the bride in my family experience tended to host the wedding so she may be from Rostrevor but this is conjecture. I will reply if I find out anything. I know she died in Lanarkshire in Jan 1890 but I am not sure if Hugh died in Lanarkshire too. She is listed as the widow of Hugh Cull in the register of deaths for Cambusnethan in 1890 but I have been unable so far to trace Hugh's death details. I will keep digging and if I come up with anything I will post a message. All the best, Pliny.

Mermin,
I am not clear what you mean. The district referred to is the area around the town of Kilkeel in Co. Down. The web site is www.familysearch.org When you get there go to SEARCH RECORDS and a blue box will drop down. Click on RECORD SEARCH pilot. If you still have trouble send me a PM (Personnal Message) by clicking on the green curly bit on the left of one of my messages.

Regards

Hi Mary (mermin) , thanks for your info about children of Hugh and Margaret Cull. I only had John and Peter so yes your info was very helpful. As far as I can establish John and Elizabeth Cull (McCall) had at least 8 children - Catherine, James, Elizabeth, Patrick, James (2nd), Daniel, Stephen (my great grandfather) and Margaret. I believe James (1st), Elizabeth and Margaret died as young children. I did a bit of digging in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow on Thursday last and I found an entry in the Poor Relief records where John applied for relief to fund the procurement of a nurse as his family had suffered a severe attack of smallpox. His family at the time was him, Elizabeth his wife, Catherine (7) James(5) and Elizabeth (2). He applied in Jan 1871 - there was a serious outbreak of smallpox in Lanarkshire from 1865-73. Young James died the following year I believe but I have still to confirm this. I am at a fairly early stage in looking into the Cull family history and if I get anything new I will let you know. Incidentally I dont know why the name changed from Cull to McCall. Any ideas? Keep in touch and all the best. Andy.(Pliny)
