1841/51/61/71/91/01 - Census Lookups Please - COZENS
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 17:09 UTC (UK) »

Good afternoon,

I would be very grateful for help with the transcriptions of the 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1891 & 1901 Census details for:

William COZENS b. 1818 Welwyn Herts

In 1841 he should be found as an apprentice Baker to John MOORE, living with the family.

I'm not sure where he was in 1851, maybe still with the same employer.

In 1853 William married Emma FILLER b. 1819 Codicote. They had 2 children:

- George William b. 1856
- John Henry b. 1857, but he died in 1858 so will not appear in 1861.

After the death of Emma in 1865, William re-married, to Mary Ann MORGAN (b. c1833 South Mimms), widow of John MORGAN.

They had 2 children:

- Amy Maria b. 1867 in Bell Bar

- Alice Maria b. 1869 ditto

In 1881 William & Mary Ann had a Grocery & Baker's shop in North Mimms.

In 1891 William & Mary Ann were probably still in North Mimms with the bakery business.

In 1901 William is a widower I think in the Welwyn Workhouse.

Any assistance would be very welcome.

Many thanks,

Nick

Hello Nick   Smiley

That's quite a shopping list   Smiley

Do you want details of all the Moore family in 1841 ?  William is certainly there  Smiley

I was going to ask what you would recommend as the most efficient source of Census transcriptions. I've heard many different impressions, including that Ancestry has quite a few errors.

What site would you recommend from experience ?

My main experience is Ancestry - and the 'errors' are often easily overcome by exploiting their search engine.

Its the best search engine of the 4 I've tried .....

When you look at some original docs, its no wonder there are 'errors' - some could be better checked I guess, but if you're on piece-work and have no idea of UK geography etc, its not surprising.

Thanks for the tip.

I've been wondering which one to go for between Ancestry or findmypast which some people seem to find efficient, for example.

Might try your recommendation on the 14 day Free Trial. Finding for myself would certainly be a kick !

Thanks again,

Nick
