Flett Gaudie family
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 19:55 UTC (UK) »

Hi, I'm new to this type of research & I've just seen posted on this site reference to Flett Gaudie.  I have a reference to a Margaret  Flett born in Stromness Orkney married to Joseph Deering.  I have found 3 children the eldest named George Joseph Gaudie Deering a sister named Jane Deering.  Who was my Grandmother's mother.  She married John Charles Derry.  The last child name was Walter James.  I would be very grateful for any info anyone has on this lady & her family.
Thanks

Hi, this is the info I have.
Margaret FLETT  who was born at Stromness Orkney, Scotland she married Joseph Deering however I do not have their marriage as yet.  In the 1881 census they were living at 9 Bakers Row, Whitechapel.  His occupation: cellerman  1891 census living at 10 Queen Street.  Occupation cellerman.
Their eldest son was George Joseph Gauldie DEERING born 24 Aug 1868 at St. George's in the East
The second child was Jane DEERING   my Great Grandmother who was born 21 Dec 1873   in Mile End and the last child I have was Walter James DEERING born 3 Jan 1877 also in Mile End
At his son George's birth his occupation was given as wine cellerman.  The family were living at 3 Grove Street, St, George's in the East.
all the rest of the info I have are of the Derry family who Jane married into.

HI

welcome to Rootschat  Smiley

Given her age on the 1881, this might well be her birth/baptism on Scotlands People (old parish records):

Margaret  Harvey Flett b./bpt 2 April 1845, Stromness

Parents - John Flett and Margaret  Goldie

There is a patron submission on the IGI with mother's name as Gaudie. Same date, place and father.

If it is the correct one, there is an entry on the same page for a possible brother:

31 July 1835 James Goldie, lawful son of John Flett, seaman, and Margaret Goldie

Margaret is entered as Margaret Harvey lawful daughter of John Flett, seaman and Margaret Goldie

Hi again

Just noticed that the top of the page has the heading 'Irregulars'

Not sure what that means in relation to baptisms but I'm thinking that maybe they were not baptised in the C of Scotland but into  another religious group.

It looks like Rev William Stobbs

 Cheesy

I think that this might be Margaret  and son James and possibly another son John on the 1841:

Grays Buildings, Stromness,  ED 9 Folio 9 Page 6

Goudie
Sally, 60, Publican
Margret, 35
Jacobina, 20
John Flett, 8
James G Flett, 5

All b. Orkney

I don't see a baptism for Margaret Goudie/Goldie/Gaudie but this is her probable sister, Jacobina:

Stromness - 19 July 1813 Jacobina
Parents - Peter Gaudie and Saroh Gaudie

In  1861

Mar Manse Lane, Stromness ED 4 Page 1

Flett

Margaret, 48, stocking knitter, b. South Ronaldsay
Margaret, 17, embroiderer
John N, 13
Thomas D, 8

Children all b. Stromness

Don't worry about the change in birthplaces  and Margaret, snr's, age - it often happened - depending on who filled in the forms!

I've been to Stromness and South Ronaldsay as well  Cheesy

1871:
Manse Lane, Stromness, ED 7 Page 1

Flett
Margaret D, 59, seamstress, b. South Ronaldsay
Margaret, 27, seamstress, b. Stromness
Thomas, D, 18, house joiner, b. Stromness

No sign of Margaret,  junior,  in Orkney on the 1881. Just as a check that she is the correct one. This is the only one showing in Orkney of the correct age.

I'm wondering if it was a second marriage for Joseph Deering as they have a child of 13 on the 1881.

I don't see a marriage on Freebmd or Scotland's people for them  Undecided

I'm now unsure of things because the one that I've found is the only Flett who has Gaudie connections but the 1871 Orkney one can't be yours  as she's in London with Joseph Undecided

 Undecided

The only other Margaret Flett b. Stromness circa 1845  is:

21 Oct 1845 Margaret Ballen Flett

Parents - Thomas Flett and Christina Ballanden

but no Gaudie connection obvious

This Margaret is also in Orkney in 1871.

Hi

Thank goodness. I think I've solved the problem!

I've had a thorough check  and I think that the 1841 and1851 censuses are the correct family but the 1861 and 1871 one one's are  different.

The later two censuses ( with the Thomas D Flett, b.c. 1853)  has mother Margaret Dunnet and father Nicol Flett.

So, it looks as if Margaret Harvey Flett (mother Margaret Gaudie/Goldie) is a strong candidate for your ancestor.

I'll see if I can find her on the 1861.

Regards
