Hi Skurrie
Just following through on the censuses with the info already provided by Ev. This looks to be David and family in 1851 - everyone born in Campsie except David:
David Harper 30, Printwork Singeing (?spl) House Labourer b. Ireland Elizabeth Harper 33 William Harper 7 James Harper 5 David Harper 2
Address: Whitefield, Campsie
I wonder if this could be a brother of David (similar profession, children's names and living in the same town) - everyone showing as born in Ireland unless indicated:
William Harper 35, calico printer Mary Harper 36 Alexander Harper 14 Mary Harper 12 David Harper 10 William Harper 8, b. Campsie Margaret Harper 4, c. Campsie James Harper 2, b. Campsie
Address: Whitefield, Campsie

hi Skurrie this could be david in 1841(freeCEN website) main street campsie stirlingshire david harper 25 agricultural labourer born ireland and elizabeth 1841 main street campsie stirlingshire(all born stirlingshire) ev
Hi ev,
Thanks for replying. l did come across the 1841 census noting David as an ag lab, but wasn't quite sure it was him, as l had noted that he was a bleacher. On looking at Elizabeth Finlay and her address as being also in Main st, Campsie, there is a strong feeling that they may have been neighbours, met and married. l'm wondering what type of farms were around Campsie at the time, perhaps David worked on the farm and moved on to being a bleacher. l'm assuming at this stage that it may be connected to silk?. The Harper family was supposed to have a small family business ‘Harper Bros Inc.’, a singeing house which was owned by David and William Harper in 1861. It is thought that the business was owned by David and his brother William with David’s sons William and James being employed in the family business.
Thank you for your time and help, and if there is anything else that may come your way to assist me. It would be appreciated.
Skurrie

William's wife Mary's surname has been written down in a variety of ways from Queedy, Querie etc. Children showing to them in Scotland on IGI:
1. WILLIAM HARPER Christening: 12 SEP 1844 Campsie 2. MARGARET HARPER Christening: 28 NOV 1847 Campsie 3. JAMES HARPER Christening: 31 MAR 1850 Campsie 4. ALEXANDER HARPERChristening: 13 FEB 1853 Campsie 5. ROBERT HARPER Birth: 11 FEB 1856 Campsie 6. JOHN HUNTER HARPERBirth: 10 AUG 1859 Campsie
Their son David Harper is showing as having married an Annabella Marshall on 26 Feb. 1859 in Campsie.

Hi Skurrie I am doing some research for a friend of mine who is descended from William Harper and Mary Quisay - It said Query in the IGI but I have elected to use that version as it appears she had a sister with that spelling visiting in 1871 at the time of the census. Afraid I have no idea where in Ireland they originated. My friend is descended from Alexander b 1853 who married an Alice - havent established her surname yet! I have only really just started on my research. I was interested in what you said about the business the brothers had? Val

I'm working backwards on the William Harper (1844) line, so you might find some of this info useful. I don't know if this would be David or William's son though, as the previous posters pointed out. The Canada 1870 migration would seem to fit better with David, but the Christening date might be better with William. Let me know if you find out other details further back.
"William M. Harper was born in Campsie Glen, Scotland, Aug. 29. 1844. In 1868 he came to the United States, locating first at Lynn, Mass., where he married Mary Martin Tweed, a native of Glascow, Scotland. Later, they removed to Toronto, Canada, where they lived for ten years, and in 1880 came to Erie, Pa., where Mr. Harper became connected with the old Stearns Manufacturing Company and later engaged in the insurance business, in which he has ben actively engaged since 1890. He is still a very active man in his profession. Mr. and Mrs. Harper were the parents of six children, as follows: William Rae, an instructor in the public schools of New York City; James L., died in Chicago in 1892, but is buried in Erie; David W., the subject of this sketch; Margaret Martin, the wife of Milton Rowley, a manufacturer, lives in Erie; Eva Hay, married Jay D. Cudney, lives at Houston, Tex.; and Ruth D., married Robert Lee Sale, president of the Sale Lithograph Company, Buffalo, N.Y. Mrs Harper died Feb 15, 1898, at the age of 52 years, and is buried in Erie."
