Badger family
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 13:58 UTC (UK) »

Hi all a welsh chatter that needs help to find a link
I am looking for information on the Badger family in Kingswinford. I am looking for a link For a Edward badger born 1786 and married a Martha/Maria and moved to Merthyr Tydfil and had a son James.
We have a christening record for James and it states a Edward and Martha as parents but not where they had come from. after searching records I found a Maria and Edward marrying in 1810 (only matching records) in kingswinford but there is also a birth record for Edward as born in Gnosall . Any information for a confused chatter would be great.

Thanks lisa

Hi

Was the christening record something that was within family documents or is it something you found on the internet

Where did you get Edward's birthyear from as I cannot find an 1841 English or Welsh entry with a 1786 birthyear

Do you have a copy of James Badger's marriage cert confirming his father was Edward

Marriages June qtr 1838

Hi
I have spent the most of 3 weeks everyday at RO in Merthyr Just to find something. we have all the information regarding James his bmd. He was Christened at the English Wesleyan Chapel on 26th May 1816 MT I have located the christening record at RO and it states Edward Badger Nailer and Martha.
We have found documentation that Edward was around until about 1849 a crime record but nothing after that as for Martha nothing of her ever being in Merthyr after the Christening. I have searched LDS and came across a Edward Badger marrying a Maria which would fit in with everything, But we dont know if these are the Edward and Maria/Martha found later in Merthyr Cant link a linkage or have further details. Perhaps someone from the area had different information.
Thank you for having a look.

Hi

But does James Badgers marriage cert confirm his father was called Edward?

If it does - then you probably have the right christening record

If it doesn't - then you are on the wrong track

Looking at the IGI entry you mention - it was in Kingswinford to Maria Bashfield

Unless you have other info that is not shown here - it looks as though you are just assuming this couple are his parents purely because the names broadly match

The IGI christening entry shows his mother as Martha and the 1810 marriage entry is Maria

JAMES BADGER  Christening:  26 MAY 1816   Pont-Morlais English Wesleyan Merthyr Tydfil Glamorgan  Death:

its only cause of the dates really that seem about the time. we cant located a Martha badger in Merthyr only the Christening. We have documented accounts of Edward from the census and purchase of a house along with crime records but nothing for martha. We have thought perhaps it was a miss spelling as maria, James daughter was called maria. And thats when I found the Maria/Edward marriage. Sounds not a valued reason either but the church they attend was English speaking only one in MT the rest were welsh it wasnt spoken.

Thanks for trying it be really nice to find a birth place for them both.

IGI also has a christening record at Pont-Morlais English Wesleyan, Merthyr Tydfil, for Charles BADGER, son of Edward BADGER and Maria, born 19 Mar 1829 and christened 12 Apr 1829.

That's a fair time after James' christening - if it's the same Edward, did he marry twice?

I can't spot Charles on census, unfortunately.

Lisa, found these details from the Old Swinford Parish Poor Law and Settlement Documents:-

Entry 90 1767 Thomas Drewry Nailer of Cradley, apprenticed to Edward Badger Nailer of Cradley.

Entry 60 1732 John Perry removed with his family from Stourbridge to Old Swinford - hired servant of Mr Edward Badger for 1 year.

1707 an Edward Badger was Churchwarden at St Mary's Old Swinford.
1718 a Wildsmith Badger was a Churchwarden (what a fascinating name)
1733 an Edward Badger Junr Scythsmith of The Hayes Lye was an Overseer

From these records it looks as though Edward was a Badger Christian name passed on down the generations.  Will get back to you if I find anything else.  Linell.

That exciting news the family must have had money as Edward owned property in the main part of town which really only the iron master owned. Edward did have some crime records too and served some time in and out of Cardiff jail for larceny. After the last sentence of 6 months we cannot find any records of where he would have gone.
Charles that was christened at Wesleyan Chapel same as James in 1829, Died aged 11 in 1840. The Cemetry where he was burried has been removed to make way for a road so no help there. No stones were kept. Shame so I am just hoping someone would be able to help or know where I could help. thanks all for your help.

Did you see this Lisa, think our posts crossed!  Old Swinford is the next Parish to Kingswinford.
