Where did you get his birthdate from? Marriage certificate should list his father's name and occupation and his birth certificate will list both parents as well as exact place of birth.

I would suggest trying to locate actual certs for Thomas to confirm the details - the 1911 census shows that Thomas was living near Dunmore East* about 18km south of Waterford City, born in Waterford City and born in around 1870. Waterford city is in the registration district of Waterford and the familysearch civil index shows two possible matches - both in 1869 (no matches in 1870).
the index details for these are :
Name: Thomas Dunne Registration district: Waterford year: 1869 volume: 4 / page: 1062
Name: Thomas Dunne Registration district: Waterford year: 1869 volume: 4 / page: 1061
you could confirm which one is correct by searching for a marriage cert - this would give his fathers name and occupation and make it possible to check this against the birth certs to establish which birth cert is correct. This looks a possible match for the marriage..but I dont see cross-match with Margaret at the moment..
Name: Thomas Dunne Registration district: Waterford quarter and year: Apr - Jun 1898 volume: 4 / Page: 389
you can order certs from the GRO by post using these index details - see : www.groireland.ie
* The district is actually transcribed incorrectly on the census website it should read Killea, Dunmore Town.

It looks like Thomas may have been posted in Co. Cork at some stage as part of his coastguard work - as the children were all born in that county. I dont know if you have any clues to the family's life at that time but there are a few births that look possible matches for his children, that could place them in Kinsale & Youghal - both towns by the sea with coast guard stations.
Name: Eileen Dunne registration district: Youghal Record type: BIRTHS quarter and year: Oct - Dec 1901 volume: 4 / Page: 637
Name: Margaret Mary Dunne Registration district: Youghal quarter and year: Oct - Dec 1902 volume: 4 / Page: 676
Name: Kathleen Jane St John Dunne Registration district: Kinsale quarter and year: Jul - Sep 1907 Volume: 5 / page: 273
They are not certain matches, but they fit locations where a coastguard and family could be based, plus some of the middle names match.. although I wonder what Kathleen's extra middle name is about ?

no problem.. I have a coast guard ancestor myself that served between about 1831 and 1856. They tended to move around quite a bit which can make finding details difficult.

Hi Colin. Can i ask you if you are a relative of Thomas Dunne ? He was my great grandfather. I couldn't believe my luck when i found this site tonight. Actually it's the previous generation, that of his father John(jack) that i am now interested in. regards Jacqueline. (Hopefully cousin).
