Motcombe/Gillingham
« on: Thursday 17 September 09 11:35 UTC (UK) »

Could some one please tell me the approximate distance between Motcombe and Gillingham? Have found ancestors living in Motcombe and yet having their children christened in Gillingham. Would there have been a train running between the 2 towns at the time?  Also, where is Bugley? How far from Gillingham? Thank you so much to everyone in advance. mygirlbill.

Motcombe about three and a half miles, less as the crow flies.

Bugley two miles.

You can get all these answers from http://maps.google.co.uk/

Thank you so much for that prompt reply. I appreciate it very much including the map!! Wow!! Right now, I am chasing down a James Jarvis married to an Ann (surname unknown) One of their children was Martha christened 1 April 1793 in Marnhull, Dorset. Can't find a marriage between a James Jarvis and an Ann in Marnhull or any further children. Any nearby towns that you can suggest to me where I can start looking? Many, many thanks from an ignorant Aussie!! mygirlbill.

What I do in a case like that is to look places on a map, then systematically search the surrounding parishes in ever increasing circles. It is laborious and time consuming but quit often brings results.

It is worth remembering that in those days it was quite common for folk to walk miles to and from work each day. Couples usually, but not always, married in the bride's parish, which is why such a search can bear fruit.

Good luck.

Thanks Jebber! I'll do that and see what I can come up with. I have heard in the past that marriages etc. usually took place in the brides parish. Something I should have remembered. Thanks so much for the advice because as you know, any advice and help is always much appreciated. Many thanks!! mygirlbill.
