I am researching husbands family and cannot find arrival of his grandfather and two brothers. All came out from London separately as follows:- Percy circa 1884 - Possibly landed Lyttelton or Nelson, worked as a shepherd on farm inland from Kaikoura (census) married Chch 1894 died Blenheim 1940 Harold (husbands gfather) arrived circa 1890 together with his mother. Again cannot find port of entry - Lyttelton? He worked Uni chemistry dept and parttime as photographer for Chch Star. Moved to Wellington early 1900s Edgar arrived circa 1892 age 19 - again where?
Hope someone can suggest new avenue of search - have only been skimming the surface on this as yet Madmax

Hi
For those who travelled to NZ from UK, 1890 or after, you can try the passenger indexes at the following website :
http://www.findmypast.com/
[Passenger indexes are free to search, but "pay to view" should you require further information from an image. ]

Hi
If you're unable to find on direct voyage to NZ, also try entry into Australia.

:'(Hi Lu, Tried the passenger list for all 3, plus the mother Louisa who I think came out with Harold - no luck at all. I know at least Harold and Louisa came direct.
To test the system I tried known voyage of my inlaws Noel and Anne Larkin in 1940 and that didn't come up either! Even had the boat name. Madmax

1893 E roll Electoral Roll (1893) - Women
Name LARKIN Louisa Electorate City of Christchurch Residence 31 Ruskin Street Sydenham Occupation Lady
Would that be mother? Just thinking if directories may then track back to narrow arrival date/ Death cert? to give length time in NZ BYe Althea

:)Hi Althea, Yes that's the mother - Harold also lived there while in Chch. The cottage is still standing and remains I think virtually untouched on the exterior. Harold and mother moved to Wellington early 1900's and mother died in 1906.Thanks for your input Madmax

Hi again Althea, no f/tree not online. will try site suggested. Harold and mother moved to Epuni Street Wellington in 1902 I think. This was address when mother died in 1906. Harold married in 1909 and gradually moved north, Son born P.Nth 1910 worked N/Ply as chemist in dairy factory and moved to Auckland around 1911-12. Two daughters born 1912 and 1913 Was Industrial Chemist for the Auckland Harbour board. Died in 1918 leaving 3 kids under 7.
Because he died so long before my husband was born, and because my husbands father died in 1964 there is nobody to ask about Harold. His two brothers Percy and Edgar died in 1940 and 1948 respectively. Although both of them married, Percy had no children and Edgar had two girls. I have an idea Edgar ended up as Town Clerk of Ohakune and there may be family links there thru the girls marriages. Madmax01

If you can PM Lu & I the names of the children, then I'm sure we can find their marriages, for privacy reasons you can't post names on this page, till we no about deaths..just to be 100% safe.

Hi Lu and Althea, I have frantically scrambled for the marriage cert for Percy but with the upheaval of moving, cant lay on hands on it. Wot I wanted to check was whether Percy was a widower or div. The cert I have is for a marriage in Chch in 1894. His wife's name was definitely Mary, but of course it was a common name then. Just had a brainwave and found all the info on Percy. Marriage cert gives his age as 31, occupation Shepherd and states he is a bachelor - usual residence Kaikoura. Edgar his brother was best man - also listed as a shepherd of Kaikoura. From my records Edgar didn't arrive in NZ until 1892 - taking years in NZ from his death cert.
The brides name is Mary Catherine Roberts spinster lived at home in Riccarton - born County Kilkenny Ireland. Father was a farmer and mother Mary Jane nee Whateu? - hard to read handwriting - could be Maori? Doing the sums of age when she died (79) and age given on marriage cert, there is discrepancy of 5 years which makes her 33 on marriage. Did she tell fibbies? Who knows? However the death cert states age on marriage correctly!
Mary's death cert in 1940 records no children and Percy's in 1944 states "not known" against the column for children. The cert also states length of time in NZ as 56 years which would tie in with the arrival in 1884 on the "Oamaru".
As Mary Catherine's father was a farmer maybe Percy met her thru farming circles, taking sheep to Chch etc. I have a very interesting photo of a livestock sale - sheep, taken by Harold Larkin and it certainly looks like the Canterbury plains. There are also photos taken at the Kaikoura spread where both Percy and Edgar worked - a vast holding by the look of it.
Anyway enough of that - again many thanks for your efforts. Will try from the other end for more info
