Help with Christening of Margaret Dodds, Durham c. 1825 Please? - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 18 September 09 08:55 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me find baptismal records for Margaret Dodds who was born c.1825 in Durham.

Her father was Robert Dodds, Blacksmith.

I don't have any details for Robert i.e. who he was married to and when, so if anyone could shed any light on Robert, I'd be most grateful aswell.

Thanks for your help............. Smiley

Hi Smiley

Was Margaret from Durham or the Durham area? The only baptism that is showing up on Durham Records Online of a Margaret, father Robert is Chester le Street 1821. I checked the Bishops Transcripts for her and it was Robert Dodds which looked like pitman and mother Ann.

However there may be others that isn't yet on the Durham site.

Where did you get the information for Margaret from?

Hi Evie,

I have traced back via her marriage cert to an Adam Palmer at St Oswalds, Durham on 1st April 1850. On there it just says full age for them both. Her father is given as Robert Dodds, Blacksmith and he is one of the witnesses. As for her d.o.b. I've got that from the census returns.

I've just got a bit more info from the earlier census returns and it looks as though her mother is called Martha (born City of Durham, c 1799). Robert (born Brancepeth, Durham, c. 1797).

I'm certain this is her family as she has a child of her own called Martha. In the 1861 census she also has an Ellen Dodds (30 - unmarried) staying with her which matches  her potential sister with this family.

Any help on this one is much appreciated.  Smiley

Hi Jeffery1_6

So that rules that baptism out. However back on Durham Records online although I have no credits to go into the full record there is a marriage in 1820 Durham of a Robert Dodds and a Martha. Fiddling around with the search , Martha seems to be Martha Metcalf as this is the only marriage in Durham in 1820 which is recorded. I will see if Ellen shows up anywhere. In 1861 is Ellen born Durham?

Hi

No Ellen showing I'm afraid. I see she was born Durham.

So I think the next thing is to trawl through the Bishops Transcripts for Durham and see if you can find anything. Have you used them before?

Thanks Elvie.............you're a star!  Cheesy

On the marriage cert of Margaret Dodds and Adam Palmer, one of the other witnesses is a John Metcalf, which would fit nicely with Martha (Margarets mum) being a Metcalfe. It seems to corroberate we have the right family here don't you think?

As you've rightly ascertained, Ellen or Eleanor as she appears in the 1851 census was born in the City of Durham, as were all her other siblings, Robert (c. 1829), John (c.1835) and Richard (c. 1837).

I haven't used the Bishops Transcripts before unfortunately so am not that familiar with them.  Sad

It's ok I answer to anything Grin

Click on the link, go to Durham and then choose Durham again on the next menu. Click that and you will see a selection of dates, choose the most suitable and click. You will be able to browse the images. Hope you have plenty of time as it can take a while but worth it if you find what you are looking for.

Give a shout if my instructions are not clear for you Cheesy

Hi

Just had a quick look at first set of dates, they weren't married in St Nicholas so you need to look at the other dates. I am presuming here that if you find the marriage then the children may well be baptised in the same church. Have to pop out now.

Really I edit things--use the "modify button" to make additions or corrections--you probably didn't see it cause it wasn't there at first.

St. Oswald:

Martha daughter of Richard Medcalf, Blacksmith, born 5 Oct 1796, baptised 25 June 1797   page 29 of 1098 BT's

More important to further your research:  Baptism:  John Metcalf, born 29 Sept 1800, baptised 5 July 1801, 11th child of Richard Metcalf, Smith, native of this parish by his wife Margaret Grey native of Berwick upon Tweed

I went backward through the BT's--it is the section with the years 1773-1869.  I expected to see a few more baptisms if John was the 11th child but I only saw the Martha one.  There was a burial of Richard son of Richard Medcalf, Smith, 27 Feb 1792.
