HELP WITH BIRTH RECORDS FOR VIRGINIA, USA

Could anyone help me with a search of birth records for my GG Grandfather, Charles Joseph Onley, who came to Australia in 1859.  He was a AB Seaman who jumped ship here and settled in Adelaide, South Australia.  According to his Naturalization Certificate he was born on 6.9.1836, at Richmond, in the state of Virginia, USA. On his marriage certificate, it states that his father's name was Watson Onley. Would appreciate help on finding my roots.

Apparently, Virginia didn't begin birth registration till 1853.

Thank you for responding.  Do you have any other ideas on trying to trace him. I have a cousin who is going there next month, and would like to give her any tips on researching him.

Try searching the census records for any Onley/Only, Anley, etc in Virginia.  Maybe you'll get lucky and find Watson.  If you do, then maybe that will give a hint as to which county he lived in.  Then you can either go to the local library of that county and see if they have any of the local records on microfilm or books.  County histories may also have a biography of the family.  If not, a quick trip to the courthouse may unearth some records.

I don't see him in the 1850 census, but in the 1860 records, there are two groupings of Onley/Only residing in Accomack and Norfolk Counties.  You might try looking at www.usgenweb.com  at the Virginia website.  Then look at what is available for Accomack and Norfolk counties and of course look at the county website for Richmond (I think it is Henrico County)-- You might get lucky.
