Another Lloyd hatter
« on: Saturday 19 September 09 11:43 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find more about William Lloyd (a hatter, b Dunmow, Essex, 1800) who does not appear in the Dunmow (Essex) records.

I have recently come across this chap who seems a likely candidate for William's brother, and hence another route back to Dunmow:

1851  HO107/1568
1 Gloster Row, Newington
James Lloyd, wid, 52, hatter, b Essex, Dunmow (indexed Dunmome)
Sarah Lloyd, 21 (22?), dau, b Essex, Dunmow

1841 HO107/706/4
New Inn St, Shoreditch
Jame(s) Lloyd, 44, hatter, N
Caroline Lloyd, 32, Y
Mary Lloyd, 20, dress maker, Yes
Elizabeth Lloyd, 14, Yes
George Lloyd, 9, Y

In 1851 Caroline may be the dressmaker (39, married, b Stepney) living by herself in Westminster (HO107/HO107/1480) and - less likely - the dressmaker (50, b Mile End) living with her son John in Westminster in 1861 (RG9/51)). This, however, conflicts with James being a widower in 1851.

Marriage (?): St Leonard's Shoreditch   Jan 1832
James Lloyd, widow, and Caroline Palmer, sp

Baptisms: St Leonard's Shoreditch
Apr 1832  George James s James and Caroline Lloyd, hatter of New Inn St
Dec 1833 William Henry s James and Caroline Lloyd, hatter of New Inn St

I would like to find baptisms for Mary (c1821), Sarah (c1829) and Elizabeth (c1827/31) Lloyd, so that I can find the name of James' first wife; and (less importantly) establish what happened to Mary and Sarah. Despite what the 1851 census I believe all the baptisms may be in Hackney.

I know about Elizabeth after 1841:

Marriage: 1856 (ie after two children)
Francis Frederick Eaves, 30, watchmaker, s Charles Eaves
Elizabeth Lloyd, 25, d James Lloyd, hatter

...had children registered as E(a)ves in 1850, 1855, 1858 who appear in the censuses where Elizabeth consistently gives her place of birth as Kingsland, Hackney not Dunmow, which fits with the 1841 census.

This link is about William Lloyd but is of no real help with the above:

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the hatter occupation.  At that time, straw hats were very fashionable, and most places had a cottage industry producing them, although the centre of production started out in Luton, but demand outstripped supply.  Between 1880 and 1900, more and more hats were being imported from India, and the UK industry declined.

Thanks. I think it is the age, Dunmow (particularly), and the fact that William and James were bopth based in Kingsland, Hackney for a while that matters more.

It may all be a red herring of course.

Looking through the Great Dunmow records I have found this as a possibility:

7 Dec 1819
James Lloyd, bac, otp m Elizabeth Perrin, sp otp with the consent of her parents
