Betsy Taylor & Jacob Criffield
« on: Saturday 19 September 09 13:39 UTC (UK) »

I believe that my search is correct so far, my ancestor, Mary Ellen Taylor, was born in Kendal 1867, her mother Nancy Taylor, born Preston Patrick 1832, presumably she was unmarried, as the birth certificate shews no father for Mary. Nancy's mother I believe was Betsy Taylor, born 1817 Westmorland, again I think unmarried.

I found Nancy as a three year old in the 1841 census, living with a family called Criffield in Preston Partrick. The head Jacob Criffield married to Betsy/Betty Criffield, with a son John born 1841.

I think this implies that Betsy married after Nancy's birth, but would appreciate local research if anyone would be so kind as to oblige.

Thank you

Jackie

I'm impressed. How kind of you all.

So many errors in the census transcriptions.

Thank you so much for this.

Now I just have to trace Betsy's parents and Jacob's.

Any help much appreciated.

You will find a baptismal entry on the IGI at www.familysearch.org for Jacob - parents John & Mary - but because of the surname Taylor - you will need to buy a copy of the 1840 marriage cert to establish Betty/Betsy's fathers name

By 1851, Betty/Betsy seems to have died and Jacob is enumerated as James on the census -

James Crossfield widower 34 Wheelwright All born Preston Patrick
John 11
Ellen 3?
Margaret 6 Twin
Betty 6 Twin
+ housekeeper Mary Oracle (transcribed as "Ordele") 34 b. Scotland

Thank you CaroleW

Just wondered if I'm on the right track. I think Betsy's parents could be Michael Taylor and Elizabeth Whitehead. Married 1802 Orton ? just maybe ?

I also saw that IGI entry but because Betty died before the 1851 census - her full birthplace is not known.  We only know she was born in Westmorland

If the marriage cert shows her father as Michael - Bingo!!

Have found Christening record for Betty Taylor, 5th May 1816, Krkby Lonsdale, (I take it births are always 'about') father Michael Taylor, mother Betty !

Hi

That's the record I was referring to above sorry - not the 1802 marriage you found.

It was very inconsiderate of her to die before the 1851 census so we don't know whether she was b Kirby Lonsdale or Preston Patrick!!

Are you going to get a copy of the 1840 marriage cert to find her fathers name?
