Hi can someone please look up:
Mary Ann Smith born in Jersey 1856 - her father was Edward Smith, licensed victualler (on Mary Ann's 2nd marriage certificate in 1890 deceased). She was my 2nd great grandmother.
She appears on the England censuses in 1881 under her 1st married name of Faulkner and 1901 under her 2nd married name, Sayers. Both censuses give Jersey as her birthplace, although the 1901 census birth place completed by the enumerater was transcribed wrongly, I believe, as his hand slipped down a line as her son William Victor was definitely born in Gosport.
Sorry but this is all the information I have and I dont hold out much hope really.
Also, if she was English but born in Jersey, what was happening around 1856 history wise please on Jersey?
Thank you kindly in anticipation ...

Hi Rosie
I don't really know if it is her or not; I had come across this entry a couple of days ago but her father is an umberella maker which is different from a licensed victualler, but not entirely impossible, I think.
Thanks for looking

Hi
If you send me a private email with your email address in, I can send you extracts from the Chronology of Jersey and Jersey Through the Centuries which details the major activities that happened each month.
If you can get a copy of Ballentyne's History of Jersey by Joan Stevens it has a specific chapter on that period which would go into more details. Your library may be able to get a copy.
Stewart
PS Was Mary Ann Smith possibly Mary Ann Harris Smith?
