Can't find Jemima Bradley in 1881 *COMPLETED WITH THANKS*
« on: Saturday 19 September 09 23:27 UTC (UK) »

Jemima was my great great grandmother - her daughter Maud Burgin was my paternal grandfather's mother.

She was born in Dec Qtr 1867 in Barnsley registration district, and is listed on the 1871 as a 3 yr old 'boarder' with Alfred Simmons and his wife Emma in Hoyland Nether (no relation that I can figure to either Alfred or Emma), and on the 1891 (after her marriage to Thomas Burgin) with a 2yo Maud, again in Hoyland Nether. Also in that household is a 32yo Arthur Bradley who is listed as 'Visitor'... believe he could possibly be a brother of Jemima.

Checked Arthur in the 1881 and there's a 22yo living with his wife Myra and baby daughter Olive, also in Hoyland Nether.

In the 1871 there's a 12yo Arthur with place of birth as Elsecar (particular area of Barnsley given as Jemima's birthplace on 1871 census) with his mother Sarah, and other children as follows: John W (10), Mary (8yo), George (6) and Ben (1).

Hope someone can help find her in the 1881 and/or clue me in as to why she might have been living with the Simmonses in 1871.

Thanks

Katie

You are assuming Arthur was her brother but have no proof.  The simplest way to solve the parentage issue is to buy a copy of either her birth cert or her marriage cert showing her parents/fathers name

The only 1881 Jemima Bradley was b 1867 Carlton - parents Frederick and Jane see www.familysearch.org    Barnsley registration district covered Carlton

There is another birth for a Jemima Bradley in June qtr 1867 - Skipton

Not assuming he was, merely wondering if he might be.

I realise that but as I am long term unemployed and not in receipt of benefits, rent and food etc come before indulging my 'hobby'... Sad

There are two separate birth registrations on FreeBMD for Jemima Bradley born in 1867, June Qtr for a Skipton Jemima and Dec Qtr for a Barnsley Jemima. Looking at the 1881 you mention, that Jemima's address is given as Carlton in Skipton, which led me to believe that the Barnsley Jemima was mine as I know of no link to Skipton but I still have family around the Barnsley/Sheffield/Rotherham area. I'm not assuming I'm right and you're wrong, it's just that the Barnsley birth fits better to me than the Skipton one.

Hello

In 1881 have a look at Barnsley RG11/4608 Folio 29 Page 7

or search for Jemimia Briadley as she has been transcribed.

Looks good ... her mother is called Sarah and the siblings seem to match.
