J J Fitzgerald, Cappawhite. A short colourful life.
« on: Sunday 20 September 09 11:34 UTC (UK) »

I am researching one John Joseph Fitzgerald born Tipperary 1898, died Dublin 1920

I have a full write up of him here.

My interest is that he was assassinated by the IRA in Nov 1920, one of the Cairo Gang murders. My grandparents lived two doors away from the shooting when it happened.

I am trying to following his early life in Tipperary, and see if any descendants are around from that family

  • A John Joseph Fitzgerald birth registration was made in Tipperary Reg District Apr - Jun 1898 which should be him
  • Fitzgerald family of Cappawhite for some years. His father was a doctor at Cappawhite, and he resigned his medical post Feb 1924 and died March 1924
  • There is a John Fitzgerald aged 14 in the 1911 cenus at Rockwell College, one of the principal catholic scholastic establishments in the south of Ireland, is situated in this district, on the road between New Inn and Cashel in Tipperary. This might be him.
  •   The 1911 census shows his father Joseph Fitzgerald Age 52, a widower, living with children, May Fitzgerald Age 20, Edward Fitzgerald Age 10, Joseph Fitzgerald Age 7, Agnes Fitzgerald Age 3
  • 1917 Lt J J Fitzgerald, the 2nd son of Dr Joseph Fitzgerald of Cappawhite, was reported missing since 5 Oct 1917. He was 19.5 years old, and had joined the Royal Irish Regiment previously, and was wounded on the Somme. In Feb 1917 he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. This is our J J Fitzgerald, the date that he goes missing ties up with the RFC records
  • He was a POW from Oct 1917 until the end of the war
  • He joined the RIC in about June 1920 and was a Sergeant
  • He was Barracks protection officer in Clare, was kidnapped and shot by the IRA but escaped. I have not been able to verify this.
  • He was shot as one of the Cairo Gang in Nov 1920
  • I have a few references to his family from Irish Times after his death. Those references are on the link to my own write up on him

I have not been able to establish which regiment he joined, medal card says Royal Irish Regt, and transferred to RFC. But I can find no reference to him there. There is a mention in dispatches for a J J Fitzgerald in the RFC but that says Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

Anyone like to add anything?
