Welsh (Cardiganshire) marriage certificate application
« on: Sunday 20 September 09 12:56 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

This is my first venture into Wales!    I feel I should know the answer to my question but cannot for the life of me find the answer on the internet.

I need to apply for a Welsh marriage certificate and want to apply to the local registration office (I understand it is cheaper to do this - sorry to sound mean).

The marriage took place in Q3 1952 Cardiganshire South Vol 8a page 464 - between Leslie T Batchelor and Myrtle T Sutter (nee Foster) - this is all the info I have but I suspect is enough.

Where/how do I apply online to the local office for this.   Many thanks.

The Register Office for South Cardiganshire is at:

Glyncoed Chambers, Priory Street, Cardigan, SA43 1BX

01239 612684  Moderator comment: phone number incorrect (see below)

It doesn't appear to have a website.   However, so far as I know The cost of a BMD certificate is usually £7 whether you order from the GRO

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

or from a local register office.  You can order online from the GRO, but I think from other register offices you can only order by post - and some of them will charge you postage on top of the £7.

If you know which church the marriage took place in, you may be able to get a copy of the parish register entry from the local archives - which is generally cheaper than an official copy  - but unless you do know the church, it would be impossible to expect anyone at the archives to find it.

Hi Gallium,

Many thanks, I will ring them tomorrow (Monday).   The reason I want to get the info so fast is because I want his dod which I don't know.   He apparently committed suicide by shooting himself on a train.   I would like to know where he did this because it will give me a clue as to where he expected to have been left land (this was the cause of his suicide - there was no land).   If I can find out - perhaps from his death cert or even inquest paperwork, I may be able to find out where I am searching for my GGG Grandfather - I had thought it was Cheshire!

Who knows - it is worth a try and sadly my anc.co membership is about to expire and I am not planning to renew it.

Thanks again, Sue

Hi Gallium,

The phone number for the Cardiganshire BMDs is actually not them - I spoke to a very nice, patient, gentleman twice - he was very understanding!

I think I may have to do it by post.

I'm sorry about that Sue.  The same number appears on several internet sources for details of Cardigan Register Office - I can't see a different one.  On the other hand, yell.com doesn't recognise 'Register Office' 'Cardigan' as having a phone number.

You could try Aberystwyth Register Office - which does have a yell.com listing. At least they should know whether the Cardigan office is still there.

Hi Gallium

Many thanks, I will give it a try.   You don't by any chance know the address of the Cardiganshire Registrars Office - do you think it would be reasonable to send it to CRO hoping the postman will find it?

Probably best, however, if I go for GRO but I sort of understood it was better to go for local office (less chance of errors!)

Hi Gallium and Moderater,

I tried the number again this am 01239 612684 and low and behold I got through, albeit to an answerphone = the office was open 10 = 12.30 (I rang at 12.40!).   I have applied by mail to the address given above but just wanted to let you know the number is not incorrect but very limited times.   From the message I got it is open 10 - 12.30 on a couple of days and 2 - 4 on others - my brain wan't entirely in gear and unfortunately (or fortunately for Welsh contactors) it changed to Welsh.   Just wanted to let you know the info you gave is not exactly incorrect.
