Hi
Were the family Anglicans or non-conformist? Non-conformist registers have a much poorer survival rate than Anglican records and less of them are deposited at record offices.

Hi
If you know what churches the family married in (after the start of civil registration since it was complusory for everyone to marry in Anglican churches except for Quakers and Jews before 1st July 1837 if they wanted their marriages to be legal) then that might give you some indication if there was non-conformism in the family.
