From England 1911 census Joseph O'Neill is shown as being born (abt 1854) in ARKIBURY, Ireland.
Family legend says that he may have come from Sligo, is there a Arkibury in Sligo?

I have put the word Arkibury onto google, multimap etc websites and get no results, could the spelling be wrong for somewhere that sounds like Arkibury, I don't know if Sligo is correct as the 1911 only says Ireland not which county

Nearest I can come up with is the parish of Achonry. After writing down in my own hand I can see a possibility of it being mistaken for Arkibury --- I've seen much worse!

The info is from the transcript, so there could be an error there, looks like I will have to run the original.

I have found some real corkers in my research from transcription, which led me a merry dance trying to find people, for example Arunnel should be Oswald and Wignahart should be Urquhart.

That could account for it, I have across some corkers in my time. One that always sticks out in my mind is Mary Clown for the parish of Magheracloone.

Some examples of mis-transcribed surnames:

Wagll for Magee
Hannit for Stewart
Ballone for Mattimore
Laston for Laydon
Wilmot for Milmore
Mewer for McIvor
Fanery for  for Lowery

and these are just the ones that spring to mind.

 Achonry is a Roman Catholic Diocese situated in the West of Ireland. And has 23 Parishes Eleven in Co,Sligo, Eleven In Co,Mayo and one in Co,Roscommon.

Yes, that is well known, but Brian is just looking for a placename given on a census return which is usually a parish or a townland.
