Laura Evans - 1891 Census (Ffestiniog)
« on: Sunday 20 September 09 19:19 UTC (UK) »

Please help with 1891 census look-up of Laura Evans c1843 and family of Ffestiniog, Merionethshire. I would be most interested in anyothers included on the census entry (maybe Cathrine Evans or Roberts for example). Thank you.

Hello,

Not sure if this is her but you perhaps have her in 1901 RG13; Piece: 5258; Folio: 85; Page: 29

where she is living with her son in law William Roberts and his children.

William and Jane Roberts are here in 1891 RG12; Piece: 4647; Folio 20; Page 33 with daughter Laura but no Laura Evans.

I think this is perhaps her then in 1891
RG12; Piece: 4647; Folio 15; Page 24
Bryn Barlwyd Festiniog

Hugh D Evans 55 yrs quarryman
Laura Evans 48  yrs
Kate Jones 22  yrs daur single
Griffith P Jones 18 yrs son single quarryman
Hugh D Evans 14 yrs son
David D Hughes 44 yrs lodger quarryman

all born Festiniog

Does that ring a bell- was she married before?

heywood

PS
Laura and children are here in 1881 RG11; Piece: 5551; Folio: 75; Page: 7

Hi Heywood and Pam, Heywood has found the correct Laura Evans (formerly Jones?) entry.

Laura Evans (my great great grandmother) was still living at Bryn Barlwyd Festinioglwyd Festiniog in 1901 with her son in law (my great grandfather William Roberts who listed as a widower) and his four daughters (Laura, Annie, Cathrine and Jane, my grandmother).

I'm pretty sure that I've found the correct William Roberts living in Ynysybwl in 1911, but he calls his wife Cathrine and claims to have been married for 20 years?!?!

In 1911 William's age and birthplace (Merionethshire) are correct and he's still living with his daughters Jane and Cathrine, who again are of the correct age and birthplace (there are said to be four living children).

My gran (Jane) married a Pontypridd man and is buried in Ynysybwl, so the Ynysybwl connection is very persuasive!

But how could William have been married to Cathrine for 20 years when in 1901 he was listed as widowed??

I'm blown away with the William and Jane Roberts information and I need to get my head around the details.

If you can post the William and Jane Roberts with daughter Laura 1891 census details I would be most grateful.

Everytime I think I understand my mother's side of the family a new name or address springs up and clouds the issue.  But better to to have too much information than too little!

Thanks for your interest and information, it really is most helpful.

Kind regards

Chris

Here they are -

1891 RG12; Piece: 4647; Folio 20; Page 33

Bryn Barlwyd Tanygrisian Ffestiniog

William Roberts 25 yrs quarryman b Towyn
Jane 25 yrs b Festiniog
Laura 1 yr b Festiniog

this birthplace for William fits with the later one I think. Also there is a daughter Jane in 1881.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of  Roberts - there is a possible death for Jane- 30 yrs September quarter 1895.

I suppose you could try to get a birth certificate for your grandmother and see who is her mother.

He may have just said that his first marriage was 20 yrs earlier and forgot about his marriage to Catherine- or may not have married her  Huh

However, there is only one marriage for Ffestiniog during the right period- 1905 - possible spouses - William Roberts and Catherine Roberts  Roll Eyes

Again if you were feeling flush- you could buy that certificate to check. Cheesy

best wishes

Hi Heywood,

I think the mystery is solved!

William Roberts marries Jane and they have their first daughter Laura, as described in the 1891 census.  After having three more daughters Jane dies in 1895 (no doubt in childbirth - the date fits).

Therefore in 1901 William (now described a widower) is living with Laura Evans (his mother in law) and his four daughters.

By 1911 William has remarried (1905) to Cathrine and moved to Ynysybwl, where my gran (Jane) met her husband to be (my granddad) and was buried in 1932 (again after childbirth!).

Perhaps William describes the marriage as being of 20 years to ensure that his girls are seen as being born within wedlock?

When Jane (my gran) married in 1925 she described her, by then late, father (William Roberts) as a coal miner and not a slate miner as William had been described in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses.  Surely another pointer toward the 1911 Ynysybwl census showing the correct William Roberts family?

Thank you for helping me so much.

Kind regards

Chris

Hi Chris
I hope it is sorted and the scenario fits well! As long as you are confident that the families are the same then that is good.
Who knows why our ancestors wrote such information!
My grandparents wrote that they had been married the correct number of years in the 1911 census to fit with the age of their oldest child but I had discovered earlier that they didn't marry until 1940s - way after all their children were married!
We had found out that grandma had been married before but my mother (their daughter)  had never mentioned it and we found that out after her death anyway (I think she was worried that we would find out). It was all to do with being respectable I am sure.
best wishes

Hi Kath

Families are as confusing as they are intriguing.

My maternal grandmother (Jane) and grandfather married in Birkenhead and lived there for a year following the birth of their first child before returning to live in Pontypridd.

I can only guess that Jane had gone to live with one of her two older sisters who were not living with their father and step mother at Ynysybwl. And my grandfather must have followed her.

This has made discovering my mother's side of the family all the more rewarding.

Kind regards
