Teasdell
« on: Monday 21 September 09 00:29 UTC (UK) »

Greetings - have found my Teasdell line back to Newcastle Upon Tyne. Have a Richard Francis Teasdell who married Ann Gibson  18th June 1820 St Nicholas Newcastle Upon Tyne.  He and Ann had 1 daughter - Louisa christened 1821, sons  Richard Francis, Francis Thomas (my g.g. grandfather) and maybe a Joseph or Stanley.  They were publicans in New South Wales - Newland Inn - Parramatta. Trying to determine if Richard Snr was convict.  Death transcription for Francis Thomas says he died March 1915 aged 85 - born London - Presbyterian.  Cant find them in Ancestry immig records.  Francis wife was Caroline MGee (RC) but they were married Presby.  Any help in figuring out this puzzle would be so appreciated.  Regards Debbie

Hi Michael,
On the death transcription I have for Francis Thomas Teasdell - 23/3/1915  aged 85yrs it states by the informant (his son in law) that time in Colony in New South Wales is 80yrs. So I guess arrival would be 1835. On Francis marriage cert Feb 1862 it states his age as 34.  Dont know how accurate informant was. Cant find birth of Francis in England to Richard F and Ann Gibson.  They must have all come out together which makes me doubt that Richard F was a convict. My grandmother told me that her mother (daughter if Francis) was called Mater and her father Pater.  Regards Debbie

Debbie,

So it seems the family left England before both the start of BMD registrations in July 1837 and the first census( to record folks names) in 1841. A pity !

I am away from home (Newcastle) at the moment, but on my return next week, I will dib into St Nicholas's records to see if there are any clues !
( In which church was Louisa baptised ? )

Do you also pay heed to other surname variations of Teasdell, e.g. Teasdale ?

( Mater ><Pater   Latin for mother><father.... I sometimes called my parents that, but in jest ! e.g.  " Mater, please prepare me a slice of bread and dripping " )

Undecided   All those of us who are of a certain age remember the Mater and Pater trend/ fad/fashion, well. But it must be confusing for other generations!

Hi Michael
Have found 2 children of Richard and Ann (siblings to my Francis T Teasdell) - Louisa christened 23rd Sept 1821 Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland and Richard (Jnr) 25th Feb 1825. Not sure if it was at St Nicholas where parents were married.  Still cant find where Francis was born.  I do feel that Ann & Richard had 4 boys and 1 girl - that's if I have the correct Teasdell  from our 1841 census - states  - 1 male 7 to 14yrs, 3 males 14-21yrs 1 male 21-45yrs. 1 female 14-21yrs, 1 female 21-45yrs.  2 females arrived free - 4 males arrived free - 1 male ticket of leave.  What do you think.  Convict arrival time does not match though.  Debbie

Ship Camden, with 198 convicts sailed 21 Mar 1831, to NSW
---------------------------
Will of Thomas Lynch, Richard Francis Teasdell listed as one of two executors in NSW.

Hi Michael Thankyou for the info.  my g.g. grandfather Francis Thomas Teasdell son of Richard Francis an Ann was married Feb 1862 (Presby) - his age is listed as 28 - birthplace England.  However, on his death Cert in March 1915 his age is listed as 85 which would have made his birth year 1829 or 1830 depending on birth month - Death Cert says he was 34 when married not 28.  He could have been born before his father was convicted but only just.  Cant find his arrival with mother Ann and other siblings.  What do you think?? Ann may have followed Richard out here around 1835?

Yes both are.

I looked in my fiche of Presby Newcastle area churches but none with that last name.--St James (but there might be a gap between 1836-1839, Hanover Square, Clavering Place Chapel, Association Congregation of the Close and Wall Knoll Presby.

Debbie,

In my experience of researching our ancestors, age at death is the least accurate. " Grandad was 78 wasn't he ? "  " No he was over 80 "
"Not at all, he was only 75 ! "

Like a race horse I have had my d.o.b. tattooed on my inner lip. I hope they think to look there at the appropriate time !

Janis's info on Newcastle's Presby chapels/churches and bapts of Louisa and Richard, highlights the fact that Richard/Ann baptised Louisa and Richard jnr chose to use C of E churches and not the nearby Presby options.

( Just a little question on them marrying in St Nicholas's  parish church in June 1820, then bapt Louisa in All Saints parish church in 1821, the Richard jnr bapt in St Nicholas's in 1825 - however All Saints and St Nicholas churches were/are hardly a mile apart )

I have no great ideas on reason for family going down to county of Surrey, then on to Australia.

Hi Michael, Firstly thankyou for all your help  Grin.  Yes ages on death certs are unreliable as it all relies on the informant. It has driven me nuts trying to find Ann and her children's arrival.  I have tried various spellings of Teasdell under both assisted and unassisted immigrants. It's getting to the point where I think they swam out here (lol).  Even if I get the Cert of Freedom or pardon for Richard - it will not tell me anything about his family. There are 2 Richard F Teasdell's that died 10yrs apart - I guess one would be father and other son.  Trying to link the Richard who arrived on the Camden will be difficult if not impossible. Regards Debbbie
