Petley,Bright-Isle of Wight ~ Cowes
« on: Monday 21 September 09 07:50 UTC (UK) »

I am researching the Petley and Bright Families that lived in Northwood, West Cowes. The Petley line moved from Kent to the Island in about 1800. The Brights were on the Island longer. I have a line researched by brother and cousins but would like to fill in more detail.

Northwood Village, Whites Shipbuilders Cowes; Directories of the
Cowes area would also help.

Owen Petley 1886 = Lynda Bright 1890
Richard Petley 1854 = Susan Owen/s 1854
James Bright 1862= Kate Spencer 1865

there is more but will not include it here yet
see~ http://thepetleyfamily.orgfree.com/

Is there a particular census/ marriage/ birth / death that you seek?

You list 3 marriages, yet they are pretty obviously not  a descendency line because of dates. What 'bits' of the history in PARTICULAR are you trying to fill in?

Hi Pauline, thanks for that quick reply,

here is the line .....

the first two are my Mother's parents
Owen Petley 1886 = Lynda Bright 1890

Richard Petley 1854 = Susan Owen/s 1854 [are Owen's Parents]
James Bright 1862= Kate Spencer 1865 [are Lynda's parents]

the line goes back to about 1763 in Kent with Larkin Petley but there is nothing i can find on him before 1841
Larkin Petley

1841 census
HO107/467/16 17 p 2
Mill Hill, St Lawrence, Kent (Ramsgate SD)

Mary Kennett 35 (born in county)
Jane Kennett 12 (born in county)
Frances Kennett   7 (born in county)
Larkin Petley 75 Carpenter (born in county)

Now I have the people I am trying to get detail of their lives, especially going back a bit. Housing, work, events that might have affected them etc. Putting the people into a context as it were. Being in Leeds makes it difficult to do much unless it is online.

Thanks for you interest

Hi,

I found this marriage which might be connected because of the unusual combination of surnames,

Leonard Pettly of (? Beor) lab bach
Ann Larkings of St Mgt - sp
at St Mgt     07 Feb 1764
Steph Bean of the s lab bond.
Volume 30 of Canterbury Marriage Licences, 1751-1780

Unfortunately it doesn't say which parish St Margarets is in  Undecided

Paul,

J Samuel Whites of Cowes were the shipbuilders; Google will find them - not sure when they closed down but I visited the factory in the 1970's - not about ships though.

Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/IndexMapPage2.aspx and zoom into the narrow part of the Medina and you'll see the boatbuilders' yard about 50 yards from the floating bridge.

Do not know where you got Northwood from there's not much there - have a look at an old map.

Regards

It's unusual for the marriage licence not to say which St Margaret's church the marriage took place in.

I wonder if the parish was St Margarets at Cliffe (near Dover)  Huh
