De-cipher Place of Birth please
« on: Monday 21 September 09 08:57 UTC (UK) »

I have 1851 census for George Eley, retired butcher living in Burslem.
Ancestry transcription for place of birth is Filey Castle, Staffordshire.  Did this place exist?  Filey to me shreaks out Yorkshire.
In 1841 census he answered yes to being born in Staffordshire.

Speaking as a Lancastrian any help will be appreciated.

Susan

Hi,

Could it be an incorrect spelling of Tyrely Castle. It is near Market Drayton and, I think, actually in Shropshire but very close to the Staffordshire border.

I read it as TIRLEY and a gazetteer says Tirley - see Tyrley, which gives it as a parish in Staffordshire, on left bank of river Tern, adjacent to Market Drayton; 6589 acres, pop 689.  This is about 1904, but no reference to a castle.
Jen, you are too quick for me!

I wonder, then, whether he's the chap baptised in Market Drayton in 1781, per this IGI extracted record:

GEORGE ELEY
Christening:  3 Dec 1781
Market Drayton, Shropshire

Father:  THOMAS ELEY

Hi Jen and Ainslie

Thanks for responses.  Followed your suggestions and find on Google Earth a Tyrley Castle Cottage.  Could be that George came from that area.  If anyone has access to parish records could we find more about him and family?

I have just discovered a 1781 christening on IGI which could be his.  Market Drayton which matches what info you have given so far.

Thanks

There is an 18th century farmhouse on the site of Tyrely Castle, which actually fell into disuse in the fourteenth century. Not surprising that we can't find it in more recent documents! Grin
