Finding out about criminal past
« on: Saturday 05 March 05 18:45 UTC (UK) »

My Maternal grandfather. Whom I never met, had a criminal past. I believe it had something to do with a shooting.

His name was Alfred J F Upfold and I believe offence was committed in Sussex (Midhurst, Chichester possibly) in the late 1940s or 50s.

Can anyone recommend what resources I could use to find out more? Cant ask my family as its a bit delicate.

Thanks
Adrian

Hi Adrian

I would have thought that newspapers from the period would be a good starting point.  Most County Record Offices keep an archive of local newspapers.
