LINKLATER of Birsay COMPLETED
« on: Monday 21 September 09 18:53 UTC (UK) »

Here's what I have:

George Linklater 1802-1877 m 1822 Margaret Kirkness 1792-1877.  I'm certain of that information.

Now, the IGI says that George's parents were Andrew Linklater and Elspet Kirkness.  Scotland's People shows 2 Andrew Linklaters b in Birsay within the right time frame:

b 19 Mar 1775 to Thomas Linklater and Katharine Johnston
b 1 Jan 1777 to George Linklater and Margaret Mannie

I cannot figure out which Andrew was George's father.  Can anybody help me?

An Andrew shows up in the 1841, 1851, 1861 censuses.  In the 1841 census there is a wife of Elizabeth but no wife in the other censuses.  It also looks like all the censuses have his birthdate in 1777.  Unfortunately the 1841 census which is the only one with a wife in it, is so unreliable re age because of the rounding down to 5 year increments.

Thank you.

Do you have a death certificate for george, that should give his parents!

Yes, I do.  George's parents are Andrew Linklater and Elizabeth Kirkness.

I just don't know which Andrew is the right father.  Andrew and Elizabeth's marriage doesn't list parents and I can't find a death record for any Andrew at all.

I see your problem, just been having a look at cursiter.com. Do you have the names of george,s siblings or children you might get an indication from them. The other option is to look at memorial inscriptions but I have been to the Birsay churchyard  ( its not listed yet ) and it could take a while. Have you tried the orkney family history society?

Thank you for this, I've now looked at the death record.  I can't believe I didn't look for a death in other parishes, how silly of me.

The death record showed not only the parents of this Andrew (George and Margaret) but also the name of a son, Peter, as the informant.  It is the informant information that has nailed that this is the right Andrew.  My George had a brother named Peter.

Thank you so much both of you, ev and akc, for responding to my request.  I am most appreciative.
