Medal Roll but no Date of Birth?

Hello List

I have the Medal Roll of Leslie George Garrattley but unfortunately there was no date of birth on it.  I wonder is there any other Army record, that is searchable, which would have the dob on? 

He served in the first World War:
Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers RHQ
R Irish, St Patricks Barracks BFPO 808 UK.

Northamptonshire Regiment. TA Centre Clare street Northampton, NN13JQ

Royal Engineers association, RHQ Royal Engineers, Brompton Barracks Chatham
ME4 4UG
 
Regimental Number: 17983, 31153, WR288560, 610412 

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi Shirls Smiley,
                   There are a couple of possibles for your chap but no exact matches on the 1901 and 1891 censii. It may help if you know where he was born or lived at the time.
They are both George ( he may well have dropped the Leslie as it was a girls name as well!)
There are no people listed at all with your spelling of Garrattley. But spellings are either Garratley or Garrateley .
First is George Garrateley born c1886 Mor Staffordshire and living Walsall Staffordshire.
Second is George Garratley born c1880 Birmingham and living Aston, Warickshire.

However there is a Marriage for Leslie G Garrattley to Sarah E Picton at Horsham ,Sussex
                  GRO Full Reference Dec Qtr 1914 Horsham 2b 774
If you get Marriage cert (£7.00 with full ref)it should give his occupation and if you are lucky his age.

Hello Rog

Thank you for replying.  I am 99.9% certain that the George born in Birmingham, living in Aston is my chappie, however, his age on the census would have him being born c1880, whereas on his death certificate in 1945 his age was 58 therefore being born c1887.   On his first marriage certificate he gives his age as 24 years in 1914 which would make him being born in 1890.   This is why I am trying to find other avenues to establish his real date of birth.

Any suggestions appreciated.

As you have his Birmingham address on the medal card (which would have been written up after the war) you will be able to find the truth when the 1921 census comes on line if they are still living at that address. Grin Long Wait.

The only likely Leslie George, born between 1880 and 1890, that I can see, is a perfect match for Roger's:

Births March 1887
Leslie George GARRETT
Shipston 6d 631

Hi Rog

Thank you for the 1911 census that was very kind of you.  He was telling 'porkies' because I have his first marriage cert to Sarah 3 years later in 1914 and he gives his age as 24 and Sarah 25, which is OK to be 1 year out, but surely not 3.  If we are to believe the 1911 census then his birth year is 1887 which would be nearer the other George Garrattley born in Mor, Staffordshire.

His occupation in 1914 was a Driver in the Royal Horse Artillery 37 Battery.

He also said his father George Garrattley was a Farmer and I believe he was a Brass Polisher in Birmingham, not much difference!!!

He seems to be quite happy to use his two first names of Leslie George and has dropped the 3rd first name of Thomas.  

Back to the search engines for me I think, but many thanks for all your help Rog much appreciated.

Look at this reference from the NA:-

"Divorce Court File: 8647. Appellant: Sarah Elizabeth Garrattley. Respondent: Leslie George Garrattley. Type: Wife's petition for divorce [wd]. . Divorce Court File: 8647. Appellant: Sarah Elizabeth Garrattley. Respondent: Leslie George Garrattley. Type: Date: 1928."

If you send away for the details it may give you more info.

You need to send a researcher as the NA won't do the searching and printing for you.

If you search for researchers in the London area, you will probably find one that is very reasonable.

Some-one had money to have divorced in 1928!

I've found Roger's one in 1901, but it gets wierder:

Armscott Manor, Tredington (which matches for birth in Shipston)

Father is Frank, Inventor and Patenter.
Mother is Elizabeth
Siblings are Hilda E, Cyril F, Roy, Eleanore A, Aubrey, Alice A and Mildred.

Yes I found the same family in 1891 ~ father Frank doesn't tie in with the marriage cert stating George Garrattley Farmer!! the mystery deepens.
