They are living with Jane’s parents I.e. Thomas Williams born in Tipton Staffs a General Labourer, age 56 and his 43 yr old wife Jane who is a Char woman born in Dudley.

Back to the military front..........
To my knowledge there is no 37 Battery, Royal Horse Artillery.
There is a 37 Battery, Royal Field Artillery. They were regular army, stationed in Kildare, July 1913 and were part of 8th Brigade. This Brigade became part of 5th Division and left for France in August 1914 as part of the original BEF.
The Northants Regiment service number for the MIC of Leslie G Garrattley (17983), looks like an attest/join date of April 1915.

Hi Phil
I'm sorry you are quite right I was typing from memory which isn't so good these days, but I remembered it had something to do with horses:
Leslie George Garrattley was a ‘Driver in the Royal Field Artillery 37 Battery‘ Horsham in 1914 on his marriage certificate to Sarah Elizabeth Picton.
I am told he was likely to have been a driver in the Royal Horse Artillery-riding one of the team of horse that pulled a gun carriage.
Thank you for putting me right!
Best wishes Shirley

Hello Shirley,
The mystery deepens.
If he was in 37 Bty and got married in the winter of 1914, you would assume that he was on leave to the UK or convalescing. 37 Bty did suffer heavy casualties at Le Cateau in late August 1914.
Where the problem lies is in that I can't find a Medal Index Card for anyone who is likely to fit. I have gone through a couple of hundred for 8th Brigade and wild card searched the RFA and all I can find is a Walter Garrattley, who I believe I have traced back (birth, marriage and first-born).
While I was sorting this out, I had a play around with the 1911 census search and came across George Frederick Garrattley, in the Military, age 24 (born about 1887), resident in Whitechapel. He may however be the one that married in Birmingham in 1906.

Hi Phil
Is the Medal Index very different to the Medal Roll Card which has his Birmingham address on it Irving Street, Birmingham?
I have come across Walter Garrittley who was a twin with Charles their mother's maiden name was Ward, so thus far I have not made the connection to him.
I don't think George F is the one I am looking for either.
I have gone back to what I now for definite and I have ordered a marriage certificate which I am confident is my LG Garrattley's. Perhaps it will give me some clues to work from.
Thank you very much for spending so much time helping me, I will keep you informed when I get the certificate.
Best wishes Shirley

Hello Shirley,
Yes, Medal Index Card is exactly the same thing.
Please let us know when you get the cert. I, at least, am finding this thread intriguing.
Good luck,
Phil

Hi Phil
I do have a copy of the above from 2 years ago when I was hitting the same brickwall, but I am a bit further forward this time, so hopefully I will solve this puzzle soon. I will keep you informed when I receive the cert.
Thank you for your interest. Best wishes Shirley

Hello Phil
Just thought I would let you know I have received the marriage cert of Leslie George Garrattley . He married Louie Pearson in 1937 in Birmingham. Louie had been married before to John Nix in 1903 when she was 19 yrs old. So another mystery solved, however, I am not any closer to finding the real Leslie George Garrattley.
Best wishes Shirles
