I discovered a family death here in 1940 not the deceased's usual residence. I seem to remember an asylum in the Craw Road or was it the poorshoose? Can any Buddies enlighten me.

There was a poorhouse at Craw Rd, Paisley and Riccatsbar Hospital which was the asylum at Corsebar Rd where the Paisley Maternity Hospital and Royal Alexandra Hospital is now. I think the poorhouse at Craw Rd was an Annexe and part of the old Royal Alexandria Infirmary which was just round the corner from Craw Rd back of hospital Calside and entrance Neilston Rd. Liz

Liz thanks for the information. If it was the poorshouse perhaps Paisley Library will have some information. I'll try them.

Hello Jock and Liz,
The poorhouse was separate from the town asylum, which, as Liz said was situated in Corsebar Road.
When entering Craw Road from the Neilston Road end after the new estate (well, new compared with the poorhouse days!) there is an entrance to the hospital grounds on the left hand side. At the top of the slight hill on the right hand side, an ambulance control building is situated. This was the site of the poorhouse building and the grounds were where the ambulance parking bays are now. Prior to it being an ambulance control building, it was the nursing training centre.
Hope this assists you, Jock.
Regards,
Dunli

Again thank you all for you help. I received a next day reply to an email I sent to Paisley Library it may be of interest.
Dear Mr Crawford, Thank you for your enquiry regarding your ancestor, Walter Crawford. 15 Craw Road Paisley in 1940 was the Craw Road Institution. Their address was given as 15-17 Craw Road, Paisley in the trades directory of 1937.
The Poor Law Institution had originally consisted of three institutions; The Poor Law Institution, The Asylum and the Poors’ Hospital. By the 1930’s the Poor Law Institution was providing care for the chronically sick as there was no longer a need for indoor poor relief. From other enquiries we have had it would seem that the Poors’ Hospital had a “hospice” function.
I hope that this information is of help to you kind regards
David Weir, Local Studies Librarian.

Many thanks for the welcome to the site Billy, and for the link. I hope I have enough time to make reasonable contributions.
There appears to be a wealth of information here.
Although I probably don't know you, your name sounds familiar.
Regards,
Dunli (also Paisley)

Thank you very much for the info on 15 Craw Road. I had assumed it was Crow Road in Glasgow. I have since been told about this site and find it very helpful. Thanks again. Jayne

Hello All,
Since posting about the location of the poorhouse, I have found out that I was incorrect.
The poorhouse was located where the housing estate now stands on the left hand side of Craw Road from the Neilston Road end. It was not, as I stated, further along and up the hill.
Apologies,
Dunli

Hi Dunli
It's where the old Ear nose and throat place was behind the Calside flats. The old building is part of what was the workshouse (the one that's all black and dirty)
Another buddie exiled in Sheffield lol

Hello Ann,
I know exactly where you are. I don't think there is anything of the big, gloomy building you speak of, only an estate of houses.
Also Paisley buddie. I was going to say 'of no fixed abode' but maybe I should just say 'still travelling'.
Kind regards,
Dunli
