COMPLETED THANKS - 1841 details please: Edmund & Elizabeth HEDGES
« on: Wednesday 23 September 09 07:45 UTC (UK) »

Good morning,

I would be grateful if anyone would be kind enough to try and spot the 1841 details for:

Edmund HEDGES b. Faringdon 1782   Occ/ Tailor
Elizabeth Ann (wife, née CLARK) b. 1782

They had 7 children:

- Elizabeth b. 1807
- Charles b. 1809
- Edmund b. 1811
- William b. 1814
- James b. 1816
- Mary Ann b. 1818
- Sarah b. 1821

Edmund and Elizabeth Ann died respectively in 1842 and 1846 so this would be the only Census return in which they should appear.
I have some partial notes on this census, but need to check if what I have is correct.

Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks,

Nick

Nick,

The image on Ancestry is almost invisible, I have a copy on CD from sometime ago, so had a look (it's not much better).

HO107 Piece 18 Book 2 Page 14
London Street ?
Great Faringdon

Edmund HEDGES, 55, Tailor? - born in county
unreadable female HEDGES, 55, born in county
Mary HEDGES, 20, born in county
unreadable female HEDGES, 15, born in county
A...d? rest of line unreadable
Daniel surname unreadable, 6

If you were to believe the Ancestry transcription, the unreadable female aged 55 is "Rodger", the 15 year old is "Sarah", A is "Alfred HEDGES" aged 10 and the last one is "Daniel CHILD" aged 6.

Having now seen two scans of this record, I find it hard to believe that these have been deciphered unless they've looked at the original record.

Good morning Harry,

Thanks for taking the trouble to look that up for me. I had a feeling that that had been the problem, ie very bad lisibility.

The "unreadable" female aged 55 should be Elizabeth, Edmund's wife, and Sarah would figure for the female aged 15 or so as they used to round down to the nearest 5 the ages I believe.

Edmund was definitely a tailor, and the London Sreet address is correct. I've no idea who Alfred and Daniel are, unless they are grandchildren perhaps. To my knowledge Edmund and Elizabeth didn't have any kids by that name, and certainly not so late in life.

Thank you for your time and help !
