Torquay burials 1904 and 1920
« on: Wednesday 23 September 09 08:39 UTC (UK) »

Major-General Sir Alexander Bruce Tulloch KCB, died 1920
Arabella Tulloch, died 1904

Does anyone familiar with the churches in Torquay happen to have come across the grave of the above couple?

Tulloch's address in 1899 was Hesketh House, Torquay. After his wife's death Alexander moved to Crickhowell in Wales but was buried in Torquay alongside his wife.

If the names are not familiar, can someone suggest the most likely churches where such an eminent man might have been buried?

I'm enquiring on behalf of a friend hoping to visit Devon soon to view her ancestors' grave

Many thanks

By the dates you are talking about the only 3 churchyards in Torquay were virtually closed to all but families who had people already buried there. I have indexed these up to the last burials and they are not there.
Your people will be buried in Torquay Cemetery- suggest you contact  Torquay.Crematorium[at]westerleighgroup.co.uk

Terry - that's brilliant! Thank you so much for the time and effort you have put into answering my enquiry. I don't think either of the people I mentioned had roots in Torquay, so as you say, it's more than likely that Torquay cemetery is where they were both buried. I'm sure that my friend will be able to find the record, and any memorial stone, either from the cemetery or from the Devon Record Office, where there is, apparently, a copy of the register.
With thanks and best wishes

You would be far better to contact the Cemetery. The registers in the DRO are purely burial registers and contain no other information- the cemetery will be able to give the location of the graves etc.

I passed your reply on to my friend yesterday and she emailed the cemetery straight away, using the link you supplied. She was delighted to be on the track of her ancestors.
I was further able (thanks to Google) to show her a picture of the fine Torquay house (Hesketh House on Meadfoot Sea Road) where these people were living in 1899.
Many thanks again for your help

I wanted to thank those who generously shared their knowledge and suggestions regarding my enquiry. My friend has now paid her visit to Torquay and was able to find her ancestor's grave in Torquay cemetery. Terry's information (that by the time this person died the churchyards were full) was particularly helpful. My friend wishes to pass on her thanks to those who contributed.
Best wishes
