Looking for William James Kennett
« on: Wednesday 23 September 09 11:16 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for William James Kennett, who fathered a son with the same name, and married a Lydia Rofsiter or Lee. He was a General Dealer (if that helps)
The son was born in Woolwich Womenswold in 1874 registered at Bridge.
I have no idea if there are siblings.
I have no other information apart from this.

Thanks in anticipation

when did he marry her? Where did the info come from?
Who was Wm Kennet junior's mum? Was that this Lydia?

Hi Geoff
Welcome to RootsChat.
Like Liz I could find nothing related to the info you supplied. I saw the birth of William Kennet Jnr on FreeBMD 1st Q 1874 but nothing else. Do you have this birth certificate which might be of some help in getting a start.

Thank you for the welcome. Glad to be here even if I am confused.

I have the Birth Certificate of William James Jnr, which is my only source of information abour this family.

It could be the same person Casalguidi but is it usual to have all these different spellings for names - Lydia - Liddia - possibly Lily.
On the Birth Certificate it has Rofsiter = Rositer ? and over a 10 year period Lydia's age has only gone up by 5 years?

Thanks again for any advice and information

I am pretty certain that the three census entries (1861 1871 1881) above are the same family - the names, ages and birth places of the children are quite consistent.  The LEEs and ROSSITERs were travelling Gypsy families.  Given that the majority of the population could neither read or write back then it is no surprise that spellings of names alter from time to time - the enumerator would write down what he thought he could see/hear.  In the old handwriting a "ss" does look like "fs" so it would be ROSSITER.  I can't see a marriage for Lydia LEE to John ROSSITER so it could be that she didn't marry Mr ROSSITER nor Mr KENNETT - what is the actual wording in the column for her name on the certificate.

Looking further, the nearest fit I can find for Lydia LEE is a Lydia LEE daughter of Geoffrey and Charlotte baptised Selling near Faversham on the IGI http://www.familysearch.org - ther are futher baptisms for children of a Jethro & Charlotte LEE who were probably the same couple.

William James KENNETT senior seems to be more problematic - there are so many William KENNETTs in and around Kent at about that time Roll Eyes

Thank you for that information Casalguidi. It does make sense . Being new to Family History one never thinks that far back ( I didn't) about spelling etc..

I have not got the Birth Certificate with me but it does state in the Mother column that she is Lydia Kennett and the names Rofsiter and  formerly Lee,
I took that to mean that she was married to WJ senior and was married before to Rofsiter and born a Lee.

Yes there are a lot of William Kennetts and I was wondering if by using a rule of thumb of 25 years a generation that it would be useful to find people? The only drawback to that would be knowing the ages of the first child ?
