Hi  Beckey and ev  Smiley

The REs fought in the Crimea 1853-1856 and Indian Mutiny, 1857 and the Chinese Wars 1857-1860, etc :

http://www.remuseum.org.uk/rem_his_history.htm#null

THe 27th Company were formed in Nov 1856 at Chatham. Here's a link to their whereabouts from then on:

http://www.remuseum.org.uk/unit_history/27company_RE.pdf

I'm thinking that it could have been an irregular marriage.

Hi

Something not quite right, Catherine only 49 on 1881 census (died aged 61 1887?)

On the disc Catherine aged 49 is Alexander's niece and unmarried. Maggie Johnston also niece and unmarried. Is Maggie Catherines illigitimate daughter?

That's what I was thinking, Terry Undecided

No sign of Thomas in the Army deaths, etc. or on any UK censuses. The informant on the 1856 birth certificate was the nurse - Margaret Fowler.

Strange that she gave him as 27th Company in the November when it wasn't formed until the December

Catherine is with her grandparents on the 1851.

I wonder which company were in Aberdeen Baracks/Hospital in 1851?

There's this entry that looks interesting:

Michael Tynan, 18, Private soldier/labourer, b. Fenla(?), Co. Clare,  Ireland

(Page 19)

Think I'll go do some more checking

Thank you all for your input, I had thought about an irregular marriage !! the birth cert of Maggie gives the nurse as witness and Thomas as father and the death cert for Catherine in 1887 age 61 gives Thomas as husband and she died of carcinoma very bad and brother Hugh as witness.
She was born 1826 at Coldingham, parents John Lamberton & Margaret Scott.

So there is something very dodgy about Thomas, though she maintained her married ! name, will have to find a marriage for Maggie, though doubt if it will help.

Why not wit. mothers death? and still stick to legitamacy on marriage, hope it was all forgotten?
