I'm trying to find the parents of Joseph Goldsmith, born c.1725 in Rotherfield, Sussex.

I've found him in the Parish Register on the Sussex Weald site but there is no information on who his parents were.

Further info I have on him is that he married, on the 13th of April 1746, an Anne Markwick at St. Michaels Parish Church in Withyham.

Any help or suggestions very gratefully received as this is a major brickwall!!

Have you looked at the actual parish record to see what other Goldsmiths are mentioned?    Are there any other baptisms that mention parents?

Hi Andrea,

Haven't yet managed to see the actual Parish Register for Withyham. It's a 500 mile round trip and, as ever, time is tight. Perhaps later this year...........or if someone's in the area........

Hello gollygee,

According to the Sussex Marriage Index, Joseph married Ann Markick (sic) in Rotherfield, not Withyham. Date is the same and both are given as of this parish.

As far as Joseph's parents go, there are two marriages in the SMI that are possibles:

Buxted, 24 April 1718
John Goldsmith
Mary Gillett (otp)


Framfield, 12 Dec 1721, by Banns
Joseph Goldsmith
Rebecca Townsend
